Both 5 Nd5 and 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 c5 3 d5 e6 4 Nf3 d6 5 dxe6 are playable for White IMO. That said, as John Watson demonstrates in his fine and dynamic (a reference for JJ Cox!) repertoire work, Black hasn't any problems against such an anti-theoretical approach.

I would think that removing the c3 and f6 knights in a normal Benoni structure is just good for Black.

I don't remember ever seeing this stated explicitly, but would guess it's pretty reliable rule of thumb and probably explains why the recapture Nxd5 is rare.  If I understand correctly, exchanges in general tend to help Black who is rather cramped; in many lines Black tries to pressure White's e-pawn and this exchange has now removed a supporter of that square; and finally it amplifies the strength of Black's ...Bg7.

However, the Benoni strikes me as one of those openings where White can get away with a few more positionally dubious moves than in other openings.

This reminds me that I once faced the inconsistent-looking 5. Nxd5 Nxd5 6. cd.  I would think that removing the c3 and f6 knights in a normal Benoni structure is just good for Black.  But after 6...d6 7. Nf3 I played the careless 7...g6, allowing the annoying 8. Bg5, when everything looks rather undesirable for Black.  I advise 7...Be7, with the idea of ...Bf6.  Be forewarned, although maybe your odds of facing this as Black are about the same as those of getting hit by a meteorite     Cheesy

Although Black cannot punish White, he should have little problem equalizing.

BTW:  Watson's book (the best book on the Modern Benoni from Black's perspective, IMO) is the only place I know where 5.Nxd5 is even mentioned.

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 c5 4.d5 exd5 5.Nxd5

5.cxd5 is the standard move. But is there a refutation of the more positional obvious approach 5.Nxd5!?
Playing against the backward black d-pawn is the idea of course.

I guess this may not be a try for an opening advantage but merely a try to have a more simple game and not allowing black his standard counterplay.

Two ideas:
a) 5-, Nxd5 6.Qxd5 Nc6 7.g3 d6 8.Bh3!?
b) 5-, Nxd5 6.Qxd5 Nc6 7.e4

Can black punish white?
Can white expect a small edge?
Can white escape with an equal game?

Thanks.
