Watson is/was (?) not impressed by 3. P-K3, referring to the Korchnoi-Petrosian Candidates Match recently (that is : 1980...).
Same with Flear (&Prie) who -of course- give 4...a6 and then either Bg4 or Bf5, althought there does not to seem anything wrong with 4. Bg4... either.
So I gather that White does better to go for a mainline Slav, objectively.

If Black tries to play a Slav set-up against the English and White plays (say) 1.c4 c6 2.Nf3 d5 3.e3, what options does Black have if he or she does not want to play ...e6? Can ...Bg4 be safely played, or does that allow Qb3 options? Is ....a6 reasonable - for instance 3...Nf6 4.Nc3 a6?
