What does Henrik recommend against 1...c5, intending to transpose to a favourable Sicilian after 2.e4? I think that his recommendation would be 2.Nf3, but then Black can switch to a KID setup with 2...Nf6, ...g6 and ...Bg7, which looks fine for Black.

Against 1...c5 Danielsen usually goes into a closed Sicilian (with Nc3, g3, Bg2, etc...)

There are no polar bears on Iceland....

That is right but I think Danielsen wanted a name that is easily associable with this region (polar circle, Greenland, Iceland and all those northern cold places)

Btw, isn't the set-up c3,d3,f4,g3,Bg2,0-0 vaguely reminiscent of a polar bear in silhouette?

He may have named it when he was living in Greenland teaching chess, a few years before moving to Iceland.

Henrik Danielsen says he has develop a new system on his own (the Leningrad Bird) and, as he is living in Iceland he called it the Polar Bear System.
You have the same think with the Benko/Volga gambit or with the Aleppo/Queen's gambit.

Why is this called The Polar Bear System?

Isn't it just a Bird Opening?  Undecided

The videochess.net site is up again.  Smiley
No idea what happened, no comment, no nothing.
Maybe just a problem of the provider. However, the site has been terribly inactive in the last months or so. No idea if the ebook on the polar bear ever will appear, or not. Still a great site.

Thanks for the good news  Smiley

The home of the polar bear is gone!

Yesterday I just made the same observation. No idea what this means. Hope it comes back. Nice work.

By the way, I have tried today twice to have a look at www.videochess.net and the connection was refused at both attempts. I got this message:
Network Error (dns_unresolved_hostname)
Your requested host "www.videochess.net" could not be resolved by DNS.
For assistance, contact your network support team

Is it my connection or is there something wrong happening with videochess?

Out of my head:

I think Ne5 is interesting. Maybe not good enough for an advantage, but black is very restricted in his play. And white will have a longlasting space advantage, without risk. I score quite well in similar positions.

It is hard to analyse, but I think you can also grind down blacks center with b4 / c4 breaks. Since e6 is not really doing much to improve blacks position, other then making the f5 break more difficult.

I'd say white should prepare an e4 "break" and try to take control of the e-row. After this, idea's such as coming to c4 with the knight a3 and making use of the weakened dark squares should be examined.
I have rarely met systems where black is playing e6 and g6 and for so far I remember white just has to be patient: as said black has weakened dark squares, his bishop on c8 is entombed and so it will not be so easy to connect the rooks.
