...and after 4..Bd6 5.c4 dxc4 6.Bxc4 Nf6 7.Nf3 Bb4+ Black plays his favourite defence (because he lost a tempo with Bd6-Bb4+)  Cheesy

If White want a win, I don't think giving a tempo is good strategy....and if White want not Black playing common lines, there are many other ways to do that....and many players used to do that. Example in an Exchange style: 1.e4 e6 2.d3 d5 3.exd5 exd5 4.g3 Nf6 5.Bg2 Bd6 6.Ne2 Be6 7.oo c6 8.b3 Qc7 9.c4 dxc4 10.bxc4 Na6 11.Nbc3 ooo 12.Rb1 h5 13.Bg5 h4 14.Ne4 hxg3 15.hxg3 Rh7 16.Qa4 Rdh8 17.Nxd6+ Qxd6 18.Rxb7 Nc5 19.Qxa7 20.Nxb7 Paulsen-Schmorl,Leipzig 1863 (ECG)

No problem...
1. e4 e6
2. d3 d5
3. exd5 3.exd5
4. d4
and instead of facing the French, you are playing the black side of the exchange variation. Of course, this is not forced (e.g. 2...c5 or 3...Qxd5) but it might be worth trying for those who are still looking for a good weapon against 1...e6.
