The main thing I'd say is that you will never get all those interesting lines of the Abrahams (as it is properly called). People will play cxd5, Qc2 and so on. So I'd look first at the Chig; if you like it, go that way.

As long as the English speaking part of the chess world see 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 g6 4.Be3 Bg7 5.f3 as a part of the 150-Attack (already played around 1930 in Argentina!), we Dutchies may feel free to call 2...c6 and 3...e6 the Noteboom  Wink.
Move order is a problem indeed. 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.cxd5 is the Exchange Slav and 2...e6 3.Nc3 c6 4.e4 (Marshall) might neither be your cup of tea.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

I play the Chigorin for some years now but I'm going to play (or at least head for) the Noteboom.
Chigorin is an excellent opening against weaker players (especially if you play 1...Nc6 and like 1.e4 Nc6 as well) and I still use it with great success in blitz, but I believe it's difficult against strong players.
Btw : my rating is 2250

Hello everyone,

I'd like your advice and opinions please. I've been toying around with the Chigorin and the Noteboom defenses and I'm ready to settle down with one of them as my main defence. Which of these choices would you recommend (and please explain why) for a club player rated 1600-1700 and my opponents are below 2000?

MNb turned me onto the Noteboom and I like it (thanks MNb) but the Chigorin is also interesting which brings me here.  MNb please feel free to chime in with more details.

Thanks everyone!
