I can't remember what I saw originally, but 11.Bxc5 Nxc5 12.a3 (TN) looks good for White, but possibly not enough to give Qa5 a ?

What, btw, is the problem with 10 ...Qa5?

That's a good point, although the more usual move order is 9...0-0 10.Qd2 Bxc5. After 10.0-0-0 Qb6 (not 10...Qa5?) neither 11.Bxc5 as played recently in Wijk (Kosintseva-Peng Zhaoqhin), nor 11.Bg1 as in Ivanchuk-Kortschnoj 1992, appear to give White anything. 11.Nd4 (played in corr AJEC 2001, Cavril-Dubocage) might be best however, although Black probably has better than 11...Nxd4 played in that game.

In the line you initially gave, what's wrong with just 9 ...Bxc5?

OK. I'll answer my own question. I don't think there is one. Black must play 7...Qb6 to survive in this line, and after 8.Na4 Qa5+ 9.c3 must play 9...c4, and after 10.b4 Qc7 11.Nb2 White has only a slight plus. I can't see any other continuation where Black isn't in trouble.

Tell me I'm wrong.

1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. e5 Nfd7 5. f4 c5 6. Nf3 Nc6 7. Be3 Be7 8. Qd2 O-O 9. dxc5

What's the best defense against this?
