Imho the 'd-viations' are underestimated. But, if you will go down that path it will require a lot of hard work to figure out which lines are best. Existing literature about it is a bit -how shall I put it- 'lazy'. It's as if you do not need to know 'lines', that you can play the same moves no matter what your opponent does. Wrong. If you look at the games of people who know about these lines (there are few of them) you will notice they know damn well when to put their bishop on f4 and when he belongs on g5 and especially when you need to prepare such a move with 'a3' (!?). If you follow the discussions here you might have seen that this is rather hard sometimes to understand. It's no 'easy way out' but it does give a very 'compact' repertoire. It may even be that it takes less of an effort to study a broader repertoire.

As I am not such a huge fan of the 150-Attack proper (imo the early Nf3 is slightly committal), I would like to add 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.Bf4 d6 (or 0-0) 5.Qd2. The strategy of course is exactly the same, but not having the pawn on e4 sometimes favours White. An annoying line vs the 150-Attack is the setup with ...a6 and b5, with pressure against the slightly weak pawn on e4. With the move order above this setup makes much less sense.
Moreover the last few years the 150-Attack has become so popular, that it is almost cutting edge theory already ...

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

Antibody,

If you are interesting in putting together a d-pawn specials repertoire you could do a lot worse that Aaron Summerscale's "A Killer Chess Opening Repertoire."  It's covers the Colle-Zuckertort, Barry Attack, Anti-Dutch (2.Bg5), Anti-Benoni, 150 Attack (vs.1...d6 and 1...g6).  All in all, it's not a typical 'one size fits all' repertoire but rather a nice collection of strong lines that are not on the cutting edge of theory.  I would also imagine that you could begin with the Colle and the grow into Summerscale's other lines.  There may be others on the site who can give you more specific strengths and weaknesses of his book, but I know a lot of people are very happy playing his lines.
Best,
Scott

Ok it is a problem against 1...d5! Then you can play c3 or a3 at the "approprié" (in french in the text) moment .

Or the opposite : London against 2...e6, 2...b6 2...c5 3.c3 e6, perfectly adapted and the subject of this March update, and Torre, with pros and cons juste like the London in that case, against 2...g6.

I only play Caro-Slav structures, with both colours, because they are the best...
But would you play 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 e6?!
The mighty triangle Ok, but only with the queen bishop out of the pawn chain!

Ok it is a problem against 1...d5! Then you can play c3 or a3 at the "approprié" (in french in the text) moment before taking the bishop out or just start as a Colle if your intention is c4 on the next move.

If the opponent goes 1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.e3 e6 then the pure Colle for your training (in which White will regularly manage to equalize after the liberating thrust e3-e4!) or the C-Z is more acceptable. Please, refer to what Tony did on it the last month.

I think you will need more flexibility in your approach. Against the King's Indian for instance the Colle sucks, but you can cope very well with a London and against some other Indian defenses you will do better with a Torre Attack. Consider these openings as a cocktail of antidotes against Blacks defenses.

Starting out on d-pawn specials diet

I am starting out on the dpawn specials after I came across some information in a book called pawn structure chess. I particularly like the caro-slav structures and noticed that you could probably get these structures as white with the colle. Prior to this revelation I didn't have a repertoire as such I just played e4, come what may and e5 against e4 and d5 against d4 come what may(I play at around 1900). I like the work by GM Prie and I thought this might be an opportunity to really understand something about the opening and where to go from there. I understand that one cap doesn't fit all but I want to begin with the colle as this was the structure that I first noticed. I hope to uncover all its limitations through play and eventually understand how the other pawn specials fit into the puzzle and how d4,c4 differs from the dpawn specials. I also want to be able to play similar structures as black. Is this approach a sensible one? With thanks for your kind help.Ken.
