The solid 2600 plus GM Alexey Dreev, mainly regarded as a Caro-Kann and French player, has been playing the Classical Sicilian recently and answering the Richter-Rauser 6 Bg5 with ...Bd7 with very reasonable results (56%).

Perhaps we spoke too soon: Dreev just got badly mauled in this line:

[Event "Chess Classic GM"]

In Chess Today, Ruslan Scherbakov commented: "This game shows how risky it may be
to play an opening in which you lack experience; even if you are a very strong grandmaster."

I always thought that this line was supposed to be borderline unsound.  Would you be willing to treat us with a sharing of your own understanding of it?

The "Classical" Sicilian is attractive to me, but I've stayed away from it because of the Richter Rauzer.

I support this question, for a similar reason: I always have thought 6...e6 being more precise than 6...Bd7 because of deviations from these transpositional lines:

a) 6...Bd7 7.Qd2 Nxd4 8.Qxd4 Qa5 (e6) 9.f4 (9.Bd2) Rc8 10.0-0-0 e6
b) 6...Bd7 7.Qd2 Rc8 8.0-0-0 Nxd4 9.Qxd4 Qa5 10.0-0-0 (10.Bd2) e6
c) 6...e6 7.Qd2 Nxd4 8.Qxd4 Bd7 9.0-0-0 Qa5 10.f4 Rc8

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

Perhaps it's time to ask Tony K to give us an update on this interesting line, which can lead to unusual positions.
