Against the 6.Bc4 variation, Seel give interesting analysis of 7...Nxe4 and 10...Re8!?
But in one game i had a bad position after 11.Qd3!?, a possibility not mentionned by Seel, after 11...g6 12.Bf4 Na6 13. Qc4?! i missed 13...Bd6! =, but 13.Rad1! is very annoying, for example: 13...Nc5 14.Qf3 Nxe4 15. Ne6!

Thanks guys, it's nice to be back!  I changed jobs last autumn and the IT Nazis won't let me access ChessPub  Cry - and I've also just moved house and have been having problems with my internet connection.

Anyhow, although I can't promise to be posting as much as in the olden days (when I was seriously bored at work!), I shall be chipping in from time to time ...

I agree entirely with TJ - Seel's coverage of the Antoshin (in the German edition) is MUCH better than Bauer's.

I must confess to being distressed that this has now been published in English - it might make it that little bit less of a 'secret weapon' now - and I have only had the chance to unleash it on one opponent so far (with success, I might add  Smiley

Moreover I will now have to buy the darn thing to see what has been updated  Angry

Hi Alumbrado, I agree with HgMan - it is nice to see you post again!  Smiley

Btw, if you 'buy the darn thing' I'd be very interested in your opinion about the updated english edition. At the moment I find it hard to imagine that there have been enough new stuff played since the german original to motivate buying it again...  Undecided

Can someone please explain to me how this is a secret weapon? exd4 was always played against me. Is it that it was out of fashion for a while? Undecided

I have seen the Seel book described as an updated version of the 2005 German book he wrote.  The German book is quite good, though I think that Bauer's Philidor Files is actually better overall -- even on the Antoshin Variation, which is Seel's focus.

Shocked Have you actually read Bauer's book?? On the Antoshin I'd say Seel is lightyears ahead of Bauer.

Hello TopNotch,

Thanks for the link, I might get a chance to try this out against an IM quite soon. It will be in the bunny v the top player first round if it happens...

Bye John S

Good luck in your game, and I hope you get to test some of the new ideas discussed.

I have recently posted an annotated Philidor bibliography here:

I welcome additions to my list....

Hello TopNotch,

Some months ago, you started a thread about 6.g3 in this line I think. Have tried searching for this thread but can't find it. If you could remember anything about this, or point me to relevant thread would be grateful.

Bye John S

Thanks for reminding me about that thread John, I completely forgot about it:

http://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1158040192/0

Looks like Seel's book may not be so new after all, but merely a translation of his earlier German edition.
