I would say that one of the advantages of the French is that once you've got a reasonable understanding of its main themes it's relatively easy to play.

But I recall Karpov in his book 'Learn from your defeats' stating that you need to lose a lot of Frenches before you understand it ( Explaining how he lost to Geller by playing the French !).

I wouldn't go that far but really it's no different to any other line : practice and look up theory later to see where to go.

Well I feel if you know it well (just like any other opening), you do really well with it. I am far from a GM, but being a club player, it gives me the sharp complicated positions I like. I am in middle games I like to play.

Above ELO 2700 nothing is too difficult to play, beneath everything. This is a cliche, but as a former Dutch prime-minister once said: cliche's are cliche's, because they are true.
It follows, that the higher the rating, the more important objectivity is. On our level we should play, within some limits, what feels good.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

Hi,
Don't you think the French defense is one of the most difficult openings to play?

No not really. Of course there are some lines that require extra attention, but so does every other opening. I think maybe the Caro-Kann is "easier" and 1..e5 is often recommended as easier, but the latter can be quite daunting as well. After all facing the kings gambit, spanish or even the italian for the first time will likely result in a nasy accident.

In my opinion, you have to be very skilled to use properly (tactics, positional understanding, etc.). It seems to me it is quite difficult to defeat a stronger opponent with it and that even defeating opponents of equal strength is more difficult than it should be. Do any of you feel the same way? Maybe it just does not fit my style... However, it really seems there are some other openings out there that are easier to play and yield better results. Any thoughts, comments?
Thanks

What you say is true, you have got to get a "feel" for the opening. After that you'll get much better at it. Just play it with white a few times against a french player of your own strength and you'll get the point Wink

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.
