If you could list the requirements more precisely I could have a look what is around in the open source world or design a new format.

It would need to be similar to the Playable eBooks, a database of games with the possibility of linking one game to another game, so at the end of the appropriate line you can just click on an icon and the other game pops up.

I don't have Chessbase and use CBReader (or Chessbase Reader) a free software for playing through the cbv files (playable e-books).

Seems to work fine for me (but perhaps I am missing out on something?).

Edit: Actually it's cbh files I realised...

I don't have ChessBase, which I detest, and I deplore its ubiquity in the chess world.  Anyway, leaving aside my animus, files formatted for ChessBase do me no good at all.

My advice would be to keep all the features of this site as accessible to subscribers as possible.  It should not be necessary to own proprietary software to make use of data for which the subscriber is already paying!

Well, this is what I say to subscribers who complain that the ChessBase eBooks are not updated as often as the PDF ones.
I just wish there was something equivalent to the CB eBooks with game quotes that doesn't use the ChessBase proprietary software, some sort of extended PGN format, perhaps, but there isn't! Sad

Now this may be getting off topic but the pgn format can in principle be arbitrarily extended using the {} comments if you want to keep the format pgn compatible. It would of course be harder to read for humans.

If you could list the requirements more precisely I could have a look what is around in the open source world or design a new format. I assume that at least variation trees and transpositions should be supported.

It should also not be too difficult to modify xboard or one of the many similar programs to support such a format.

Tony, why is there no playable style e-book for the King's English?  I sorely miss having that as I use the playable style books quite a bit for the Symmetrical and English 1...Nf6.

I will happily put more playable eBooks online as soon as I get some more opinions from subscribers on whether they prefer the old style or the new.
I simply don't want to commit too much effort to one format and then discover that everyone preferred the other one!!

I second that, much easier to work with the chessbase playable style. I suspect almost everyone shares this sentiment.

That doesn't seem to be reflected in the number of downloads, but see the thread in 'Discussion' for more on this.
Anyway, there is a new 1 c4 e5 one to download. Smiley

Perhaps many do not realize that one can get Fritz 12 packaged with Chessbase (I am unsure if it is the light version) in America for right around $20 US.  If it is light, I haven't had any trouble doing anything I would want to do with the software yet.

I wonder why you keep updating openings books in pdf but not playable CB books. It'd be much easier to work with them for me.

I'd noticed it but assumed it just had a comma missing, so:
English, 1 Nf6 and others, which makes sense (if it desribes the content?!)

That's funny, no-one had noticed that before although it has been written like that for years on the site! I will change it. Smiley
