1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.O-O b5 6.Bb3 Bc5 7.Nxe5 Which may also transpose from 5.Bc5 Nxe5 6.d4 b5 7.Bb3  I was wondering if I could get any thoughts on this variation and why it's not played more, but also to check out a particular position.

7...Nxe5 8.d4 Bxd4 9.Qxd4 d6 10.f4 c5 11.Qc3 Neg4 12.e5 Ne4 13.Qf3 d5 14.c4 Nxh2! (bxc4 15.Ba4+ Kf8 16. Bc6 Rb8 17.Nc3 but what about 17.h3 Nh6 Bxd5! and black cannot take the bishop)

15.Kxh2 Qh4+ 16.Kg1 Bg4 17.Qe3 Ng3 18.Re1 d4 19.Qd3 0-0 20.Nd2 Bf5 (Nh1/Nh5/Nf5 can all be tried and they're tricky but I always saw white with an advantage) 21. Ne4 Nxe4 22.Rxe4 g5! 23.Bd2 g4 24.g3 Bxe4 25.Qxe4 Qxg3+ 26.Qg2 Qxg2+ 27.Kxg2

Seems like a pretty critical position to me, all of white's other 23rd moves don't look to cut it for more than a draw. Black's up a "point" here, but white has the bishops and a more active king. Black has the queenside majority but I don't know how to get it going. White might try f5 f6 Bf4 and move the king up the board.

Here's my own feeble sample continuation: 27...Kg7 28.Kg3 h5 29.Rh1 Rh8 30.f5 Rae8 31.f6 Kf8 32.Bf4 and white is looking better and better.

Are you the same senna who plays on net-chess.com?

While 7.c3 d6 8.a4 Bg4 looks fine for Black, 7.a4 Bb7/Rb8 8.c3 d6 is somewhat annoying. Black can try 5...Bc5 6.c3, but must accept b5 7.Bc2 d5!? in that case.

I think the simple answer is that 7.c3 and 7.a4 pose Black more problems and risk less for White than 7.Nxe5...

I prefer 10...Nc6 to 10...c5. Black seems fine to me.

Senna, I wonder what book and database sources you have been using to dig up these variations? What computer program did you analyze with?
