The idea of h4 (Spassky) is to soften up Black's king side in the event of a White pawn storm on the King side rather than just chase the bishop around : that is a tempo gain bonus!

Once Black has fended off the attack then the h5 pawn can often be a weakness in the ending for White but also Black should avoid any endgames with dark squared bishop versus dark squared bishop. The g7 pawn can be a real liability in this situation.

I would recommend "Play the Caro-Kann" by Houska which is excellent in its coverage of ideas. Wink

I am now switching for d4 to e4 and I'd like to know why is 6.h4 more popular than 6. Bc4 in the classical Caro-Kann? Both seem very agressive to me but my first impression is that h4 weakens white K-side. (1.e4-c6 2.d4-d5 3.Nd2-de4 4.Ne4-Bf5 5.Ng3-Bg6)

Position after 6.Bc4:

And after 6.h4

Yusupov once said that “The problem with the Dutch Defence is that later in many positions the best move would be ...f5-f7” but he is surely wrong.
