I am not sure if this actually was Dgvincent's question, but Markovich' answer is fully correct!

In my opinion 5...a6 idea 6.Qd2 b5 7.Bh6 Bxh6 is best for Black; pawn e4 is slightly weak. This is similar to the Ujtelky Defence. Black's plan is Bb7, Nd7 and c5 with good pressure against White's centre.
The only ones who can transfer this thread are Teyko and Mr.Kosten.


I'm not sure this is a Pirc thread since the question was, if you play the KID, do you have to allow the Pirc?  The answer is, no, by no means.

No, in general, if a knight appears on c3 before c4 or e4 has been played, Black should instantly play ...d5.  For example 1. d4 Nf6  2. Nc3 d5!.  Then 3. Bg5 is the Verresov, which you should study up on (I like 3...c5; many people play 3...Nbd7).  1. d4 Nf6  2. Nf3 g6  3. Nc3 d5!  4. Bg5 would make less sense, since Black can just play ...Bg7.  (One of the ideas of the Verresov is to meet 3...g6 with 4. Bxf6.)   In either case I would rather be Black, since I have in hand the move ...c5 to try to undermine White's center, while White has no such move to undermine mine.

Not many people would play the KID if it required Black also to accept the Pirc.  Also, even if I played the Pirc, I might not want to let White decide whether to play against it or against a KID.  But of course, if you simply love to defend the Pirc, you could choose to allow the transpostion.

That could also be  transposed out of the 2kts variation of the modern defence.

simplest is to go to the 1.e4...forum, press "start new topic" wtih something like :
- Subject : Pirc by transposition
- Message : Hello, after 1. d4 Nf6 2. Nf3 g6 3. Nc3 d6 4. e4 Bg7 5. Be3 0-0, what is best... as in your previous post.

I think it's called the Pirc, and commonly reached after 1. e4 d6 2. d4 Nf6 3. Nc3 g6 4. Nf3

All is in the title and the variation is: 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 g6 3.Nc3 d6 4.e4

Has this opening been studied on Chesspublishing.com forum ? I've searched but not found... but have I done the best search ? Smiley
