Hannes Langrock's latest From the Sidelines column at the Chess Café website is devoted to the line (1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 a5) 5.Nc3 b5 6.Bd3 Qb6 ('!?' - Langrock).  His conclusion is that Black is OK - just.

Good question.  I have been wondering this myself.

It seems like the Kan is a lot less popular since Khalifman aimed his guns at the Kan and that Black is struggling against 5 Bd3. It also seems the Taimanov is viewed as being more reliable than the Kan. Certainly there have been no new books advocating the Kan since Emm's book which might suggest that black is struggling. Is the Kan still okay? What line do you think offers the best chance for black: 5...Nf6 or Bc5? Anyone know of any upcoming books?
