Yearbook 45, but on 8...Bd7, not on 9...Bd7.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

If you are interested, Tiviakov did an article on this some years ago in NIC yearbook.
Forget the number, but you can check on NIC site. Guess Martin referred to Tiviakov's notes for his Starting Out book.

Yes, anti- 9 0-0-0 lines should be the focus of Dragon players. Though perhaps a little surprisingly, a certain super-GM did mention to me a month back that 9...Bd7 appeared in perfectly good health. (with ...0-0).

So in effect your saying don't castle?  Hmm.. I never thought of that I guess I always assumed castling was a necessity.  It would be interesting to try to play out the game with the king still in the center.

But if I don't castle what is my response when white plays Bh6?

In fact, I do not mean "never castle" but castle only when it is necessary.
Bh6 question: Rooksway18 gave you the answer.

Yusupov once said that “The problem with the Dutch Defence is that later in many positions the best move would be ...f5-f7” but he is surely wrong.

To answer your question, in many cases, against a Bh6 by white, ...BxBh6 (drawing the queen away) followed by ...RxNc3 is what dragoneers wish for!

Anyway, A. Martin's book on the dragon features this approach of delayed castling (...Bd7, ...Rc8, ...Ne5, and, if Bh6, then typically...Bxh6 and ...RxNc3 give good practical chances).

If white doesn't play Bc4, you can leave your king on e8 and develop on the Q-side. So, you can spare one usefull tempo. And if the bishop stays on f1 or goes to e2, it will be (more) difficult for white to develop pressure on the e-file.

ok... but what if white doesn't play Bc4 and just plays 0-0-0 anyway?  Isent that like saying I'm hoping for Bc4 in the main line?

Those people mean with 8...Bd7 the sequence 7...Nc6 8.Qd2 Bd7 hoping for 9.Bc4 0-0.

Hi so I see from reading past threads that there seems to be lots of doubt surrounding black's chances in the line 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 g6 6.Be3 Bg7 7.f3 0-0 8.Qd2 Nc6 9.0-0-0

So I've read that several people say they "avoid" this line by playing 8..Bd7.  So my question is how does this change anything?  Doesnt white just castle anyway and its pretty much the same thing?

Sorry for my ignorance.
