It's very strange!

One of my friends often plays this weird opening in blitz but only in blitz! And he is a very respectable 2300+ player!

I'm feeling playful. Dazzle me, Lev!
1. e4 c5 ; 2. e5!! Ktc6 :
- 3. Ktf3 Qc7 ; 4. Qe2  4. ...g6 /4. ...g5/4. ...h6!? (my choice) /4. ...e6 =+ in all cases
- 3. f4 d6 ; 4. ed e6 =+

I had a game like this on Internet Chess Club. Playing White, I won in fine style. The opening moves were
1 e4 c4 2 e5 Nc6  3 Nf3 Qc7 4 Qe2 g6  5 b3 Bg7

I'll post the game later.

You didn't post the game!  Smiley

It's a shame this thread wasn't continued, as I think rare openings should be explored more.

I assumed that after 2...d6 White would get all excited and play 3. Bb5+.  Not that Black isn't still fine.

How about 1.e4 c5 2.e5 Nc6 3.Nf3 d6?

Blehh why am I looking at this thread...

Actually, I should also pick up on this.  3. ...e5 and White's play looks pathetic. A bit better might be 3. d4 cd ; 4. Qxd4 intending 4. ...Ktc6 ; 5. Bb5. Not that this is enticing either.  Too many refutations, Lev. Can we move on to another item from your wonderful bag of tricks ?

Dear Lev,

I'm afraid this is another blatant example of your self-centered attitude towards the forum. Willempie wrote that Black gets active play for his g-pawn, when he in fact gets active play while regaining the e-pawn. Hence my comment that his suggestion is not a gambit for Black.
Incidentally, one might conceivably describe 2. e5 !! as a gambit. It gambits time and position for the sake of being unorthodox and if Black is intent on cornering the weakling, he should eventually manage to gobble it up (e.g. 4. ...h6).

Regards,
UD

I never said anything about it being a gambit. Rather, the idea is to steer away from well-established and over-analyzed mainlines of the Sicilian Defense.
Uberdeker, one key point is that in your line, Black has played 1...e6, not 1...c5, against 1 e4. Thus, if necessary, after 1 e4 e6 2 e5 d6 3 ed6 Bd6 4 Bd3
the game is very even. And after 1 e4 c5 2 e5 d6 3 ed6 Qd6 4 Bd3 (4 Nc3) White is OK here. He may even gain a slight edge by attacking the Black Queen, which is deployed too early.
Dear Lev,

I have no idea what you mean by "key point", or by "thus if necessary", but no matter. The position 1. e4 e6 ; 2. e5 d6 ; 3. ed Bxd6 ; 4. Bd3 is definitely more "even" for Black than for White.
No need to discuss 1. e4 c5 ; 2. e5 d6 as no one has suggested it for Black.
Willempie's line is amusing, and this fits the bill perfectly as all we can hope to obtain from this thread is amusement. By the way, Black regains his pawn, so this is no gambit apparently.

UD

Hi Lev,

I am a bit amazed you didnt suggest 4..g5  ;) which looks fairly agressive and sensible.
Eg: 1.e4 c5 2.e5 Nc6 3.Nf3 Qc7 4.Qe2 g5 5.Nxg5 Nd4 6.Qe4 f5 7.Qh4 Qxe5+ 8.Kd1 Nf6 with quite an agressive black setup for the pawn...

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

Well, the main "problem" it poses is how best to win the pawn...
By the way, 1. e4 e6 ; 2. e5 is perhaps best met not by 2. ...c5, but by 2...d6 :
3. f4 ? de  ; 4. fe ? Qh4+
3. d4 de ; 4. de Qxd1+
3. Ktf3 de ; 4. Ktxe5 Ktd7
3. ed Bxd6

You're probably right. I guess the only thing that can said for 1.e4 c5 2.e5 is that it takes Black out of mainline theory, and gains space, and poses unusuual problems. Hang on, I'm starting to like it ...

In principle, I wouldn't choose this, as 1. e4 c5 ; 2. e5 must be worse than 1. e4 e6 ; 2. e5.
Why not corner the weakling straight away ?

How about 1.e4 c5 2.e5 e6 ?!
The game has transfered into a defence against a line Steinitz used to play against the French, namely 1.e4 e6 2.e5, and then one of the recommended replies to give Black a good game is 2...c5.
My take on it is to keep it an unorthodox  Sicilian Defense, where
Black has no idea how to react.

Very true. I wouldn't know whether to laugh or to cry ...

Grin

Now why the heck would I want to play 3 f4 to begin with? Not my style. Besides, it might  transpose into a French Defense after 1 e4 e6 2 d4 d5 3 f4 c5
4 Nf3 Nc6. My take on it is to keep it an unorthodox  Sicilian Defense, where
Black has no idea how to react.

If NM Yefim Treger  wins with it, so can I.
