Yes, I did see that there was a Forum upgrade, but following the old maxim of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' I thought I would wait awhile. Are there any new functions worth having?

Golden rule is to always be one or two versions behind, unless you have a big problem.
Very often with new versions they fix a lot, but they also introduce some new problems.
A bit like changing your opening lines Wink

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

Greetings,

I noted the following advice:

Quote:
SPECIAL NOTE:
-------------------------
If upgrading from any other version of YaBB other than Y2.3 Please follow these instructions.

- In user profile, avatars, signatures and URL links have to be verified and re-Saved by ALL members.
- In The Admin Center admins will have to set Quick Post/Reply colors (whether or not they enable it and set Images pixels to a reasonable value).

As ChessPub is currently using 2.2.1, this advice would have to be followed!

[I see that someone on the YaBB forum is waiting to see if anyone else has problems upgrading from 2.1 before going ahead themselves.  Wink ]

As always, security enhancements are always to be welcomed:

Quote:
In addition, we are excited to announce some new bonus features, including support for MySpace videos, a password strength meter, an option to search within YaBBC tags on the post search page, Net::SMTP::TLS mail support, and a backup recovery feature.

Cool

Also, they appear to be embracing Ajax (starting from 2.3 ) which...

Quote:
This will improve the speed of these functions and reduce bandwidth and server resources used.

In other words, improved performance. Cool

You'd need to chat with your techical expert to decide whether the upgrade is worth it or not - and clarify how to go about it with minimum risk/downtime!  Shocked

Kindest regards,

Dragan Glas

I turned the Forum email notifications off to see how they changed the server load (which was high). I will turn them back on if possible. Smiley

You can now get notified of posts 'live' with PMs, providing you are online, if you prefer. Look in the User CP. Smiley

Try clearing your browser cache - at least that worked for me. Then you will get the "new look", with the glowing dots.

Actually I'd prefer to have the look with the orange sticks  Undecided

So do I - but it seems that Tony has solved that problem for us. Thank you, Tony.

Yusupov once said that “The problem with the Dutch Defence is that later in many positions the best move would be ...f5-f7” but he is surely wrong.

Would have been great if it was possible to have big fonts also with the classic layout...

Try 'Larger Old Style'. Smiley

Since u ask for input...

What about using a different colour on the glowing dots (like orange) indicating new posts.

...or maybe I need glasses...

There is now a template version with bigger message text, just go in your User Panel and then Profile, then Options, then change the template to 'Big'. I can change other values to if anyone wants. Smiley

Perhaps a sticky in this section with a continuously updated list of "broken" mods would help.
That way, we'd know for what to look whilst being alerted when our favourite mods were fixed.

OK, I have split the thread, and will keep this one for news of any Forum software news.

One small thing: the forum view seems to switch arbitrarily between two views:
One: glowing dots represent unread threads, solid dots indicate no new info.
Two: old style, orange tick represents unread threads in subforum, blue tick shows no new info in subforum

I have the same:
at work (under Windows) I get the orange ticks and at home (under Linux) I have the glowing dots Huh
