Even if we allow bishops to jump 1.Bf4 will never become very popular as the alternative 1.Bb5 mates immediately.

Well, 1...c6 or 1...Nc6 blocks it, unless you mean bishops can jump over any number of pieces...

Have you not tried jumping over more than one piece with your Knights?

Between the first game and the moment of becoming popular some time may elapse...

Greetings,

tafl
According to the Wiki article on the Maróczy Bind (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mar%C3%B3czy_Bind):

Quote:
The first game known to feature the Maróczy Bind was played in Swiderski-Maróczy, Monte Carlo 1904. Interestingly, Maróczy played against it in that game but became fascinated by the variation and used it in his own games later on.

A Hedgehog is often employed by Black against the Bind.

Kindest regards,

Dragan Glas

The history of the Dragon variations is actually quite an interesting subject. The best presentation I have seen can be found in Gufeld's 'Chess; The Search for the Mona Lisa'.  Gufeld is not among my favorite authors but his style is entertaining and this book is well worth its price. However, I believe the articles are mostly lightly edited versions of articles published in US chess magazines, so some buyers may feel cheated.

I don't have the book available here, but as far as I remember, the Maroczy bind was a very early reaction to the Accelerated Dragon. Dus Chotimirsky named the Dragon in 1901 and the first game I could find with Maroczy playing his bind is from 1904. However, I seem to remember from Gufeld's book that Maroczy's first experience with the line actually was on the receiving end as Black.

Yes, the Maroczy, I agree. But I think the name was given before this way of slowing down play became popular, i.e. when the accelerated was that variant of the dragon where black got the liberating d5 almost immediately, in one go. I don't think you'll doubt the tactical nature of (non-maroczy) dragons ?

I was referring to tafl's magnificent dry humour! Dunno the French, I'm afraid.

Excuse me the off topic, but, what's the meaning of "Dry!" here?  Might it be translated to the french as "Touché"?

Thx

I see what you mean. The Accelerated Dragon is usually associated with the tedious and rather stale Maroczy Bind positions while the Accelerated London can lead to wild complications after say 2.Bf4 c5 3.e4.

In fact the name is well chosen, only one does not associate it spontaneously with an opening that - how shall I put this- is almost the reverse in character of the dragon.

Bibs, I do buy chess books. I just don't want to have to waste money on the whole book because I all want to know is what they recommend against the accelerated London System, which they only have a couple of pages on.

I saw the table of contents of the book and they called 1 d4 d5 2 Bf4 the accelerated London System, which is why I called it that.
