Hi,
Yesterday, Grischuk played 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3.e5 c5 4. c3 Nc6 5. Ne2 against Gelfand in
the Blitz World Championship ...

Is this variation more than a surprise weapon?

I suspect not.  Presumably if Grischuk really thought 5. Ne2 would challenge the French at a theoretical level he wouldn't have revealed it in a blitz tournament.

As to the specific line Black should play - I haven't a clue.

I am not sure if f4 is such a good idea:
1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 c5 4.c3 Nc6 5.Ne2 f6 6.f4 fxe5 7.fxe5 cxd4 8.cxd4 Qh4+ looks pretty nasty for white.

I don't know. 9.g3 Qe4 10. Rg1 isn't as nasty as it looks.
e.g. : 10. .. Nb4 (what else?) 11. Nbc3 Qc2 12. Bh3 Nd3 13. Kf1 Qxd1 14. Nxd1 Bd7 15. Nf2
and white has a slight advantage in my opinion.

Another interesting idea is 7. dxe5

Hi,
Yesterday, Grischuk played 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3.e5 c5 4. c3 Nc6 5. Ne2 against Gelfand in
the Blitz World Championship. After 5. .. Nh6 6. g3 Nf5 7. Bh3 Qb6 8. Bxf5, Grischuk obtained
a good position and after a tactical skirmish, he won the game.
At first sight, Ne2 makes some sense. The f-pawn is not blocked. If black plays f6, then white
can simply play f4. Also, plans involving c5-c4 or Bd7-b5 are not good anymore.

Is this variation more than a surprise weapon? What should black play?

I am not sure if f4 is such a good idea:
1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 c5 4.c3 Nc6 5.Ne2 f6 6.f4 fxe5 7.fxe5 cxd4 8.cxd4 Qh4+ looks pretty nasty for white.

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

I'm no French expert by any means but the obvious drawback of Ne2 is that it weakens White's control of e5, so a plan based on a quick ...f6 would seem like a logical response.

Or maybe the plan is to meet ...f6 with Nf4 and Qh5+!?  e.g.  1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 c5 4.c3 Nc6 5.Ne2 f6!? 6.Nf4 fxe5 7.Qh5+ g6 8.Nxg6 Nf6 9.Qh4 hxg6 10.Qxh8 cxd4 11.Bg5 - Black's pawns look impressive but it's not entirely clear (to me at least).

Of course Black doesn't have to go in for this though - in the lien above he could play (after 6.Nf4) 6...Nh6 intending to meet 7.Qh5+ with 7...Nf7; or (and this looks elegant to me at first glance) 6...Qc7 with the idea 7.Qh5+ Qf7! or 7.Bd3 fxe5 8.Qh5+ Qf7 when 9.Ng6 Nf6 10.Qh4 hxg6 seems to give a superior version of the exchange sac, and 9...e4 is also possible e.g. 10.Be2 Nf6 11.Nxh8 Qxh5 12.Bxh5+ Nxh5 and Black should be able to round up the h8 knigth with a clear advantage.

Yet another one of Murey's brainchildren. I'm afraid I can't answer your question, since he's not particularly objective when talking about his variations, but it's certainly rich with ideas.
