Erm, so do you know what is wrong with taking the pawn?

General advice - dont take anything too seriously in a game by anyone below say 2300. At the very least. 2400 would be a more suitable cutoff point for your dbase searching. Above that you would expect people to be somewhat well-prepared. Below that many are simply enthusiastic amateurs like myself who would give something a punt.

I am referring to the variation 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.c3 Nf6 4.Be2 Nbd7 5.d3 b6 6.0-0 Bb7 7.Nbd2 g6 8.e4!?

I searched my database and found that there are three ways to play.

in the game Rendle (2238)- Hunt (2365) 2003 8...Nxe4 (Maybe 8...cxd4 first?) 9.Nxe4 Bxe4 10.Ng5 Bc6 (I guess 10...Bb7 is better) 11.d5 Bb7 12.Bb5 Bg7 13.Qg4 a6 14.Nxf7 Kxf7 15.Bxd7 Bxd5 16.c4 Ra7 and after a long series of moves Black won.

in the game Matras (2269) - Beata (2261) 8...cxd4 9.cxd4 Bxe4 10.Nxe4 Nxe4 11.Bc4 Nf6 12.Bxf7+ Kxf7 13.Ng5+ Kg8 14.Qb3+ d5 15.Qh3 Qe8 16.Qe6+ Kg7 17.f4 h6 and Black slowly unravelled and won the game.

The first two games seem to suggest that taking the pawn is okay, and that the pawn sacrifice is unsound. However, on searching through my database, I found a game against two GMs, which went:

Glek (2555)- Ftacnik (2585) 8...cxd4 9.cxd4 Bg7 10.Bd3 0-0 11.Re1 e5. In the end they drew.

If there is nothing wrong with taking the pawn, why is it that Ftacnik did not take it? Is there something in the pawn sacrifice that I missed?

Can someone enlighten me? Comments would be appreciated. Thanks.
