There's an Adams game where White also fell for this. I forget who he was, but evidently someone good enough to reach a drawn pawn ending against Mickey.

Smyslov_Fan,

There is even more hope for you as IGM Ftacnik fell for it as well. Smiley

In the second diagram 1...g5 was also answered by 2.g4!

I am surprised that an IM would have missed white's continuation after 1...g5??  This well-known mistake has been around for more than 100 years!  Oh well, at least there's hope for me to score a win against an IM from a dead lost endgame!

No pieces!???

Me as well now. Something wrong with the chess diagram website, I guess.

Here's the FEN for the original diagram:
8/6p1/4pp2/7p/3Pk2P/4P1P1/5K2/8 b - - 0 1

Or also just listing the pieces:
white: Kf2, pawns on d4,e3,g3,h4
black: Ke4, pawns on e6,f6,g7,h5

I agree too about 1. ... Kd3! 2. Kf3 g5 (3. g4 hxg4+) and 1. ... g5? 2. g4!

I liked the little details of this position  Cool

I'm guessing g4. First thing to look at anyhow.

Pls keep the mocking to a minimum if I am wrong....

Thx Bonsai for sharing this position with us!
I agree with JonHecht. The solution of your puzzle must be 1...Kd3 indeed, when 2.Kf3 can be met with
2...g5, because white has no longer his saving reply against 1...g5.
By the way securing the invasion of the King is not the whole story. Black may have been tempted
by the following line: 1..g5 2.Ke2,g4! 3.Kd2 [[3.Kf2,Kd3]],Kf3 4.Kd3,f5.

Unfortunately white has a much stronger reply to 1...g5.......... Wink

Ree-Ftacnik 1978 is very similar, and rather famous.

Ftacnik played 1...g5? in this position, which has the same refutation as your position.
An IM should have been aware of this.

I like Kd3 first, then g5. I looked at f5 with some tricks, but simply g5 after first securing the invasion of the K makes more sense.

This is a rather amusing endgame I watched last weekend (this was board #1 in a team match and it was rather a relief that our player as white did not loose this game...):
http://www.france-echecs.com/diagramme/imgboard.phpfen=xxxxxxxx%2Fxxxxxxpx%2Fxxx...
Black (an IM) is obviously doing very well and is in fact winning. He played 1...g5 here. Can you spot why that is wrong and what he should have done instead?

PS: Computers find the right way very easily, so don't use them.
