Many DVD’s have region codes, and they typically only play on a player or DVD-ROM drive sold in the country where the DVD movie was sold.
Did your Fritz come directly from ChessBase in German?
The actual region code is in one byte on the DVD. The DVD drive has a region code in its firmware. PC’s DVD-ROM players often have the code in the software (VISTA is probably your real problem) or MPEG-2 decoder. The two codes must match for the drive to play the DVD-ROM. The code is also printed on the back of a DVD package, superimposed on a small image of the globe.
Region code 1 logo found on the package for a DVD to be sold and played in the United States and Canada.
Region code protection is used to stop unauthorized duplication of copyrighted materials.
VISTA could be looking for a regional code and because Fritz 11 is software, it may not have a regional code. There are “unauthorized hacks” to the Windows 98/XP registries have allowed some to play any DVD on their PC’s.
I hope this make sense . . .

My dvd drive on my desktop which runs Vista will not recognize the Fritz 11 dvd. It has no problems recognizing all my other dvds. Also the Fritz 11 dvd works on my laptop dvd drive which runs windowsXP.
Any advice?
