With firefox, I see an unremitting field of black (but I do see the white pieces and the white parts of the black pieces). I admit I have my system background set to black (saves on eyestrain) and my foreground to light green.  I suspect that instead of the system default foreground, it puts "black," which is what most of the world uses for a default foreground.  A persistent problem for black-background users.

Very nice job, Odd Gunnar Malin!  Relying on external servers to provide the board images always made me nervous, and this is simpler than inserting a link to the French site anyway.

OK, I've added the code and the images. Now, according to the instructions all we have to do is
Code
Select All
write the tag '[fen]'followed by the Fen output
(from ChessBase, say) then'[/fen]'

It works! What a classic game!

@TopNotch: Thanks!

Neat.  But using Firefox, I don't see shading on those squares.

Thanks! Just a minor problem with trust to much on my memory when writing code. (If someone downloaded Chess.pl, they better do it again.)

I did a test to create an addon to YaBB forum software to be able to do this like an internal feature. If the owner here want to add such a feature to this forum I will help them out.

Sure, great idea! What do I need to do? Smiley

Hi.

I added some instruction to the message in the link above. If you need more help please come back.

This is really my first attemt to look at this. I downloaded YaBB a few days back (2.jan) to see if I could use it for my purposes. And of course I had to add a chessdiagram to it. I didn't know perl but that was an easy task compared with learning the anti-moscow gambit.

Since it is my first contact with both the yabb software and the perl language, it probably be improvement. First I want to let the server set together the images in stead of using many small images like in the above and then test the server load to see what is fastest. Then I could look at how to create a button in the message editor so a user could create diagrams without knowing the fen/epd format eg. a chessboard editor.

I can NEVER remember how to do this, and I always wind up searching, for a long time, for an example.  It would be SO useful to have a sticky HOWTO on this subject.

Utilise the quote feature to see a breakdown of the code I used to generate the following diagram.

Please note that fen notation can be generated using Chessbase.

For easy recall, save the format to a Word document on your comp with a filename such as Fen Notation or similiar. Remember to place the appropriate Fen Notation after fen= in the supplied example:

WHITE TO PLAY

Let me know if the above instructions were successful.

Postscript: There are other diagram examples in the 1.e4 e5 section, just check out the Philidor threads on the Antoshin and Shirov's refutation.
