Some interesting material there indeed - the Evans gambit update in particular was well needed.

On a more general note, it is interesting that Marin is at times quite enthusiastic about Whites chances, which can only be a healthy thing. He is obviously a very dilligent researcher with a high sense of danger, but as we´ve seen omissions or mistakes were still possible.

A pleasant surprise and good to see that Mr. Aagard is as good as his word.

Time allowing, I hope to be be scrutinising closely these pdf files over the weekend, supplementing and comparing his findings with mine to determine whether this second editition deserves a resounding two thumbs up.

I am particularly interested in the expanded Kings Gambit analysis, as I am sure many on the forum are. Hopefully Tony will re-visit this line soon in a future update as promised sometime back.

The long updated update is now available on the Quality Chess website. Hopefully, I will get a chance to dig into it this weekend.

In addition, the entire Evans gambit chapter is available free in PDF.!! Certainly useful even if you don't own the book

I look forward to seeing if Marin has found an effective counter to 10. Qd2.

Yes, Marin gives 10...Bxf3 11.gxf3! exf4 12.Qxf4 Ne5 with equality he writes. In this position he says: "In order to maintain chances for an advantage, White should keep both his bishops". 13.Be3 Qe7!

This doesn't look equal to me at all, I much prefer White here.

Would Marin really want to play this as Black?

On a side note, my chesspub subscription just expired, however I am still owed outstanding updates for April and was wondering how to access them when they eventually get posted other than by renewing of course.

In re King's Gambit, it would have been so easy to base the repertoire on 2...exf4! and, oh say, the Modern Defense.  The poor man must be having nightmares about 2...Bc5 by now.

Well, the update was not solely to deal with the 10. Qd2  issue. There were several other issues.

Anyway, I assume Markovich was being  facetious, else we would now expect Fluffy to come out with a second edition of "Play the Semi-Slav" to deal with Topalov's 12 Nxf7  Cheesy

Well, if someone here refutes that, will Marin put out a 3rd edition?

Good question, bearing in mind the line he gives is completely untested there must be a fair chance that there is an improvement for White somewhere. Undecided

The 2nd edition just arrived through the post (from Poland!) and has an extra 40+ pages, and an additional chapter (Bishop's Opening). I have only had time to quickly look at the King's Gambit so far, it is the same up to page 28 when there is an additional 4 page discussion of 10 Qd2, and an extra line is added to the ECO-style lines. Smiley I will check his analysis over the next day or two.

Which line of the King's gambit are you referring to?

Does he cover my pet line in the Scotch?

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 exd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nxc6 bxc6 6. e5 Qe7
7. Qe2 Nd5 8.c4 Nb6 9. Nc3 Qe6 10. Qe4 g6 11. f4 d5 12. Qc2!
(not covered in the first sdition!) 12...dxc4
(Not the only move but cxd5 and Nb5 next is the threat)13. Be2!
(This is a logical novelty of mine in a rare position. 13. Ne4 f5! as given by Emms) 13...Be7 14. O-O O-O 15. Be3 and white is in great shape as i have proven in two of my recent games!

There is a lot of new material in many of the chapters, for instance he now covers 7 Qb3 and 6 0-0 in the Evans Gambit.
He really has put a lot of work into filling all the holes, and this 2nd Edition is a lot better for that. Smiley
