Hello.   Here is a line I am considering:

1.e4 e5  2. Nf3 Nc6  3.Bb5 a6  4.Ba4 Nf6  5.0-0 Ne4  6.d4 b5 7.Bb3 Be7

Looking for some opinions on this interesting choice from Black.  I was thinking it seems rather playable, perhaps a bit sounder than the Walbrodt (6. ...Be7?!), and maybe a decent surprise against someone over-booked on current 7.Ndb2 theory for white.

Given mention in the C80 Intro & 9.Be3 line, Olivier Renet calls it a "refreshing alternative" and gives a brief five move analysis showing decent to very good play for Black based on Sammalvuo-Norri, Finland 1995.

I look at this game and the more famous game Tal-Smyslov 1977 and without seeing much more on the line (on this site) I wonder why this move is not seen more frequently? 8. Nxe5 looks best for white followed by ...Nxe5 9.dxe5 Bb7  10. Qg4 when the white attack apparently has more bark than bite.

Are there improvements for white, and if not, what are some reason why it is not trotted out more often?  Is it due for a revival (perhaps)?Currently considering squeezing it into a repertoire for alternative Spanish resposnes, but a paucity of high level games always heightens my anxiety about a line.   Grin

Any insights?

I know I've made some very poor decisions recently, but I can give you my complete assurance that my work will be back to normal. I've still got the greatest enthusiasm and confidence in the mission.
