4.Nxc3. I play the Danish like a coward, such as Alekhine. Btw I notice you are a coward as well. You return the pawns at the very first occasion! Even 4...c6 and 5...c6 against the BDG are more courageous, as Black wants to maintain his material advantage.

MNb, nice try. I would accept the Danish Gambit, and then see how you play it. Danish Gambit is one of these openings I admire.

You mean like 2.e4 exd4 3.c3 ? Must be the first time, that the Danish is called a cowardly opening.

To my mind, 1.d4 Nc6 2.e4 d5 is '='. If you know of a line that leads to +/=, could you post it in the 'daring defences' section? I would be most interested.

Predictably enough perhaps, this particular 1 ...Nc6 devotee is by no means convinced these are facts at all. Evidence ...? One piece of strong circumstantial counter-evidence might be that Tony Miles seems to have felt that 2 ...e5 is OK, but that after 1 e4 Nc6 2 Nf3 Black really should play 2 ...e5. Of course, the point should be made too that there is +/= and +/= ...

The reason I myself am not quite convinced by 1 ...Nc6 in response to 1 d4 is 2 d5, but I'm prepared to be persuaded that's a prejudice.

While White has not proved a forced win in the Englund Gambit, there is little doubt that White obtains at least some advantage. However, I think that Lev is on the right track with the quick ...e5 idea. Let me suggest, however, that Black prepares the ...e5 pawn break with 1...Nc6!. Now 2.c4 e5 is fine for Black, 2.Nf3 d5 is only slightly worse for Black (compare with 1.e4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 - not), which leaves the "natural" 2.e4. Either 2...d5 or 2...e5 is +/=, but the 1...Nc6 devotee would not worry about such minor facts. He knows that, if he has studied the positions in detail at home, he will be able to outplay his opponent.

In reply to Bibs' post before he can even type it: True, this does not have a lot to do with 1.e4 e5, but neither does 1.d4 e5.

Also, most of the world's top players play 1.e4 e5 and the Semi-Slav as Black.

He has a repertoire book with the QGA (and other d4 openings w/o c4) 'How to Beat 1.d4' and a 'Chess Explained' work on the QGD.  The latter is not technically a repertoire book, but you can probably develop the basics of a QGD repertoire with this book.  And Rizzitano's comments and analysis are always first rate.

I think anyone who plays 1.e4 e5 as Black would like eventually to play ...e5 against a 1.d4 set-up.  The Tango, Nimzo-Indian (intending Zurich lines with an eventual ...d6 and ...e5), Czech Benoni, King's Indian Defense (generally planning ...e5 rather than ...c5 lines), Budapest, Albin Counter-Gambit plus Chigorin against 2.Nf3, Modern (planning planning ...d6 and ...Nc6), and 1.d4 Nc6 all come to mind -- and are all lines I have tried from time to time myself (as a 1.e4 e5 player.)
If you play the Philidor (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d6) you might consider seeking direct transposition with 1.d4 d6 2.e4 Nf6 3.Nc3 e5!? or first ...Nbd7 and ...e5.

I especially like 1.d4 Nc6!? to foil White's typical ideas, and a repertoire along these lines was suggested by Andrew Martin at ChessPub long ago.

The Tango is also very good, as discussed by Joel Benjamin:
