11...Nxe2+ 12. Qxe2 f5 seems satisfactory for black. He can play for fxe4 and quickly undermine white's center in the case of Nd2, and if white doesn't move the Nf3 then ...Bg4 is annoying.

Surely Black must be consistent and take the bishop on e2. Of course, it does not look logical, but we need to consider the bishop's potential, not just its current position. (After all, why, in the Classical lines does White, in the face of a raging Black attack with ...f4, ...g4 etc, often capture the bishop on c8 (with his knight), rather than a rook on a8?- Also, in the Bayonet mainline, White responds to 9...Nh5 with 10.Re1 and 11.Bf1, to preserve his bishop.)

In the quoted game, Bareev-Amonatov, after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.Be2 0-0 6.Nf3 e5 7.0-0 Nc6 8.d5 Ne7 9.b4 Nh5 10.a4 Nf4 Bareev continues 11.c5 f5 12.Bc4! (preserving the bishop from exchange), two moves later then kicks the knight from f4 by playing g3.

Which piece is better now, the knight on h5 or the bishop on c4?

yesterday i was wondering how can black continue after the exchange in e2 and couldn't really find something convincing.
how do black players mainly reply to 10.a4 ?

I've been trying this for years with great success for white. If black plays Nxe2 (which he rarely ever does... why exchange his best piece for my worst) I'm instantly better. the immediate f5 is the most common answer.

Bareev's 10.a4!?

Hi guys.
This month's column on the kid shows a game from Bareev where, as white, he plays the Bayonet (9.b4) and replys to 9...Nh5 with 10.a4!?. The idea of course is to gain time on the queenside. What do you guys think about it? I gave it a quick look (semester is close to ending in university and must study  Cry) and it seems to me that the main test should be 10...Nxe2 11.Qxe2 f5. Mikhalevsky stops here saying that black  has exchanged his best piece for a passive one but my try and open the lines to profit from this. Personally it doesn't seem easy to do that but I repeat, I just gave it a quick look. Has anybody tried this out yet?
