Most players that I have meet has not played f3 in that position Smiley

But that move has got a point since black most castle and tactics are not in hes favor after that. Fortunaly

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4
Nf6 5. Nc3 g6 6. Bg5 Bg7 7. f3 O-O 8. Qd2 Nc6 9. O-O-O (9. Bc4 Nxe4) 9... Nxd4 10. Qxd4 Be6

looks rather good for black

Why have you omitted f3?

Bg5 leaves Nd4 unsprotexted after Nc6 and I have won several games by the Nxe4 tactic

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4
Nf6 5. Nc3 g6 6. Bg5 Bg7 7. Qd2 Nc6 8. O-O-O Nxe4 9. Nxc6 Nxd2 10. Nxd8 Nxf1 *

So I see that the limited analysis on 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 g6 6.Bg5 ... is generally dubbed "ok for black" with the simple 6..Bg7.

But in the main line Soltis variation doesn't white play 6.Be3 and then later play Bg5?

So wouldn't playing 6.Bg5 effectively place white a tempo up assuming all other moves remain constant?

Or maybe not! what can black do to punish this move order?
