Thanks Bibs. I've read something similar somewhere and his assessments do quite often change from one set of annotations to another (but to be fair, that's to be expected in openings, and I find his comments better than none at all - not surprisingly since he's much stronger than I am!).

Okay, I'll answer your question.

'Play 1...Nc6' recommends playing ...f5 at the first opportunity. If the opponent gets full control and domination over the e5-square, capitulate.

'Chigorin Defense According to Morozevich' recommends imitating Morozevich at every opportunity. Especially his unpublished blitz games.

'The Chigorin Defense' recommends castling queenside before move 7, no matter what White plays. Obviously this may involve some sacrifices along the way.

'Ideas Behind Modern Chess Openings: Black' recommends playing the least theoretical move possible, so that you only have to study one GM game and not thirty.

And finally, 'Unusual Queen's Gambit Declined' recommends that 3.Bf4 is a forced win for White since the domination of the e5-square will secure a fine sloughter.

Hi Tim,
Perhaps beware Tsesarsky. Gallagher wrote an entertainingly withering criticism of him. Somewhere, forget where, maybe KID book, maybe Tromp.
Roughly that he destroys good games with idiotic, incorrect commentary.

I recommend:

1. d4 d5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bf4 Bg4. Also possible is 3...Bf5 (which I used to draw an IM in an important game).

After 4. e3 e6 5. Bb5 just play 5...Bd6, with the idea of perhaps ...Ne7. Against 5. c4, Broznik advocates 5...Bb4+.

A well prepared opponent may meet 2...Nc6 with 3. g3. Broznik then thinks 3...Bf5 is safe whilst 3...Bg4 is a little risky, but certainly playable.

Remember: the strongest players will try to play pawn to c4, seeking an initiative. But most players are not strong.
