Thanks Bibs. I've read something similar somewhere and his assessments do quite often change from one set of annotations to another (but to be fair, that's to be expected in openings, and I find his comments better than none at all - not surprisingly since he's much stronger than I am!).

What do the following 5 books on the Chigorin recommend against the London System?

Play 1…Nc6

Chigorin Defense According to Morozevich

The Chigorin Defense

Ideas Behind Modern Chess Openings: Black

Unusual Queen’s Gambit Declined

Okay, I'll answer your question.

'Play 1...Nc6' recommends playing ...f5 at the first opportunity. If the opponent gets full control and domination over the e5-square, capitulate.

'Chigorin Defense According to Morozevich' recommends imitating Morozevich at every opportunity. Especially his unpublished blitz games.

'The Chigorin Defense' recommends castling queenside before move 7, no matter what White plays. Obviously this may involve some sacrifices along the way.

'Ideas Behind Modern Chess Openings: Black' recommends playing the least theoretical move possible, so that you only have to study one GM game and not thirty.

And finally, 'Unusual Queen's Gambit Declined' recommends that 3.Bf4 is a forced win for White since the domination of the e5-square will secure a fine sloughter.

All our dreams come true if we have the courage to pursue them.

Actually, this is quite an interesting question, as I discovered at Gibraltar when I faced the London via 1.d4 d5 2.Bf4 rather than 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bf4.
Bronznik and Morozevich/Barksy don't cover the former move order. Wisnewski does and gives "2...Bg4!", while condemning "2...Nc6?!" because of 3.e3. In ChessBase, 1.d4 d5 2.Bf4 Nc6 3.e3 e6 (my choice) scores very well for White, but Tsesarsky (I think I've recalled his name correctly) reckons Black has equalised because Black will follow up with ...Bd6.
[I haven't cheked the Lane and Ward books for London coverage]

Hi Tim,
Perhaps beware Tsesarsky. Gallagher wrote an entertainingly withering criticism of him. Somewhere, forget where, maybe KID book, maybe Tromp.
Roughly that he destroys good games with idiotic, incorrect commentary.

Dear Accipiter, you being new here (welcome!), I must tell you something. Anonymous is not interested in what you recommend. He wants to know what those five books recommend. That is not your fault of course.  Wink

I recommend:

1. d4 d5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bf4 Bg4. Also possible is 3...Bf5 (which I used to draw an IM in an important game).

After 4. e3 e6 5. Bb5 just play 5...Bd6, with the idea of perhaps ...Ne7. Against 5. c4, Broznik advocates 5...Bb4+.

A well prepared opponent may meet 2...Nc6 with 3. g3. Broznik then thinks 3...Bf5 is safe whilst 3...Bg4 is a little risky, but certainly playable.

Remember: the strongest players will try to play pawn to c4, seeking an initiative. But most players are not strong.

They all advocate ...Nc6 setups.

I already knew that. Can you expand upon what they recommend?

Of course, happily: Wisnewski in "Play 1...Nc6" recommends to play ...Nc6 as early as move 1.

After which Prie recommends 2 a3! forcing Black to declare his intentions. We await Morozevich's second edition to see what the great man recommends against this setup.

Anonymous, will your book contain a London system repertoire for White?
