I never quite grew used to such "crappy pawn structures," which might help explain why in my Dragon-playing days I played mostly 9...Nxd4 10. Bxd4 Be6 ...

I think it's mainly a matter of taste. Dragon players grow used to crappy pawn structures! It looks as playable to me as anything Black gets in the Dragon or acc. Dragon. Technically White may be a bit superior but it's not easy to convert such an advantage.

It was considered += in ECO, NCO (section written by Gallagher), Tiviakov's B75/76 monograph and Modern Chess Opening Encyclopedia (section written by Gennadi Nesis).  I notice that MCO (section presumably by Nick de Firmian) calls it equal.

I do not know what your sourches are, I took some sample lines from memory and Rybka assesments. Most books that I read has considered it to be equal expets from Beating the sicilian 3 of course Smiley

That "totally equal" position is considered by several sources to be slightly better for White.

Thanks a lot for that information Bragesjo. I have only played the dragon like five times or something and I have met this move more than once. But exactly why would you say black is equal after 15.Rfd8?

I have meet this lots on times on the internet and after this simply seqvens

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4
Nf6 5. Nc3 g6 6. Be3 Bg7 7. f3 O-O 8. Qd2 Nc6 9. O-O-O d5 10. Qe1 e5 11. Nxc6
bxc6 12. exd5 Nxd5 13. Bc4 Be6 14. Ne4 Qc7 15. Bc5 Rfd8 *

black is at least equal. Even the 9 0-0-0 d5 pessemistic Andrew Martin concludes in Starting out the Sicilian Dragon that black has no problems here at all. The funny thing about Qe1 is that it was recommended by Nunn and Gallagher in the old Beating the Sicilian 3.

How does black get a good game after...

Why isn't 10.Qe1 after 9...d5 played more often by white? It seems pretty logical to me.

How should black play principally after this move
and what are some important games in this variation?

1. e4 c5   2. Nf3 d6   3. d4 cxd4   4. Nxd4 Nf6   5. Nc3 g6   6. Be3 Bg7   7. f3 O-O   8. Qd2 Nc6   9. O-O-O d5   10. Qe1

Thanks!
