Thanks everyone who replied...  I am also wondering what people think of 4.f3, yes 4.f3 not 5.f3.  4.f3 is feachered in attacking with 1.d4 by Dunnington.  What do people think??
Thanks,
ZATARA

I quite like 4.Nf3, not fearing the Blumenfeld (e6) and hoping for g6 5.cxb5 a6 6.Nc3 axb5 7.e4 b4 8.Nc3.

I have always preferred 7..d6 8.Bf4 g5 9. Be3! Nxe4 10. Bd3 Nf6 11. Bxg5 Bg7 12. Ne2, when it's a pretty decent sized mess.

Probably better 9...Bg7.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

I agree. If black knows the variation in advance, white is at best equal.

If Black is playing the Benko and does not know the current line against the Zaitsev he probably has good chance of getting diced.  But, its such a forcing line and easy to remember that I won't venture it as White.

Recently I've been toying with the 4.Qc2 (declined) lines, which seem underexamined and remain fertile ground for original & (possibly) creative play.

I know I've made some very poor decisions recently, but I can give you my complete assurance that my work will be back to normal. I've still got the greatest enthusiasm and confidence in the mission.

Really? I would think that most Benko players would relish being able to play typical plans and put their pieces on familiar squares and just grind away. It surprises me, since a lot of times in the Zaitsev the positions look nothing like a Benko! I looked at it a little bit when I played 1. d4, and I never thought White was worse in any lines. What's your preferred response after 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 c5 3. d5 b5 4. cb a6 5. Nc3 ab 6. e4 b4 7. Nb5?

Shhhhh....

The Zaitsev is busted and is good for Black as White does not even equalize in main line..

I used to play this as White eons ago.  But was put off by 7..d6 8.Bf4 g5 9.Bxg5 Nxe4 10.Bf4 Qa5.  Also, I wasn't sure what was happening after 10..Bg7 11.Qe2 Nf6 12.Nxd6 Kf8 13.Nxc8 Qxc8.  Have there been any developments in these lines?

Hi all,
wich is sharper and has better reputation; 5.F3 OR 5.B6.
Thanks,
Zatara

This is an easy one.  5.f3 is sharper.  5.b6 has a better reputation.

If you are looking for a sharp system against the Benko, why not give the Zaitsev a whirl? That's about as sharp and as un-Benko-ish the Benko can get. Cheesy

As a Benkoist, I relish seeing the Zaitsev.

Bit of an aimless question.  Play through some grandmaster games in both and see what kinds of themes and ideas come up and what you like or dislike.  Ask yourself why White would play either move—what s/he is playing for—and whether you are more sympathetic to one plan or the other...
