A recent game at the club I play in featured the following game:

Bruno,R (2355) - Lakdawala,C (2512)

1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.f3 de 4.fe e5 5.Nf3 Bg4 (I guess this move, helping to put pressure on e5 and d4, is more ambitious than 5...Be6)

6.c3 Nd7 so far this is given in Houska's book on the Caro-Kann but play now continued 7.Be3 Ngf6 8.Nbd2 Bd6 9.Be2 (with Nc4 or Nh4 possibilities as mentioned by Cyrus Lakdawala) 9...Bd6 10.00 00 11.h3 Bh5 12.Nh4 Be2 13.Qe2 Rfe8 14.Bg5 Re6 and white's pieces seem to coordinate nicely towards f6 and f5 to attack black's king. Black, the higher rated player, eventually prevailed but white 'comes out ahead' in the annotations.

If your interested, view the whole game on an interactive board with Cy's annotations here:http://groups.msn.com/SanDiegoChess/cyrusannotates2.msnw by searching for Bruno-Lakdawala. You will be asked to provide an msn netpass key I think it is called to actually view the game, which is free to sign up for.

I (uscf 1985) play the Caro-Kann, so I'm wondering if there is a 'nicer' way for black to handle white's approach.

Black 'held' the strong point at e5, a general recommendation when playing 5...Bg4 from Houska's book, but it seems that white is indeed threatening to continue to build up against black's king and I don't see a way for black to easily counter it. Perhaps that is too much to ask.

Any comments or suggestions?
