Thanks for the info. This sound excellent, and should be really useful. I've got it on order from Amazon.

Does anyone know if this book covers just the Classical French or the MacCutcheon as well?

In fact, even though a bit dated (2001) this is rather a good book, with much original analysis and references to many high-level correspondence games ignored by other writers.

It covers all the lines after 3 Nc3 Nf6. The MacCutcheon section is particularly strong, since it refers to a couple of quite strong MacCutcheon thematic corres tournaments (the players included John Cox, David Anderton, Jon Tait and yours truly.

Glenn Flear and Nigel Davies also contributed to this book, which IMHO deserves to be much better known.

Of course, theory is evolving constantly, but it is my experience that books on the French tend to remain useful for a long time, since it is very much an opening of structures and ideas, and there are comparatively few lines where a new game radically overturns the assessment - and where this does happen, there are nearly always other, similar lines to use while your main weapon is in the repair shop.

As I remember things it covers everything after 3 Nc3 Nf6. It is quite old though - the recent Psakhis volume from Batsford on the same lines will rather more up to date and probably a bit more comprehensive.

The drawback to the Psakhis books is the sub optimal layout - you'll have to put a bit of effort in to get at the information. Depends what you're after really.
