Similarly even if our readers adopt Carlsen's (well not exactly his) 12...a6, I would be surprised if many of them ever had to face 13 Rhe1.

I completely agree but...
by looking at moves like 13.Rhe1 and how the game develops one starts to have a deeper understanding of how the system with a6 works (and the dragon in total). What typical plans both colours have etc. So even if nobody ever meets the move in practice, it has practical value.

This is indeed what I was hoping for (already some time). And the arguments Mr. Ward gives in the introduction make some point albeit I have a slightly different opinion but that's a matter of point of view.

Finally all important games are gathered and although i didn't have enough time to make a deep study of it, i had the impression that everything is very relevant and nicely explained.

--> all the games needed to be analysed are analysed so... well done!

I've just received the September update, and I am pretty sure no-one will be disappointed! I hope to get it online by tomorrow. Wink

Right, the September update is really great and with its selection of games it compensates for what we had missed in the last few updates, namely the most recent and theoretically important top-level encounters. Mr. Ward has proved that he is capable of illuminating top-level chess games while preserving his unique entertaining and instructive style of writing.

Yes, yes...This is the Ward we want and luv.

I'm not questioning the quality of the annotations. I really like Chris' writing style and his books, I just think his choice of games could be better. He seems like the offbeat lines more than the main lines (especially the Soltis variation), but it seems to be that goes against the grain of most of the Dragon subscribers, at least the ones that are vocal in the forums.

I completely agree, by his preferation of offbeat lines the dragon will never escape its reputation as a dubious opening. And that's how it is regarded by nearly all topplayers and a lot of players under it. So if finally some very good players suddenly start playing the dragon and not only as a surpriseweapon, this means that they made a deep investigation of the dragon and came to the conclusion that it is stronger than it's reputation.

So to escape it's reputation as dubious it seems evident that one has to start to look at the games who try to prove it is sound. And to obtain this, it is logical that toplevel games need to be investigated first.

Maybe Mr. Ward only likes the dragon as a dubious opening and prefers to keep it away from being a modern mainstraim opening? I certainly hope this is not the case as in my opinion it's a very dynamically balanced opening!

I disagree. I want well annotated games which is what are being provided. I find that every month the games provided help me learn more about the dragon.

Why does Chris perpetually pick obscure games instead of the most important theoretically? It seems as though month after month top level games slip through the figurative "coverage cracks" and 3 Dragondorf games take there place. Am I the only one who feels this way? There are tons of Carlsen and Radjabov games that I'd rather see get covered and analyzed, but maybe it's just me.  Grin

I absolutely agree with you. The theoretical importance of Mister Ward's covering of the main lines of the Yugoslav attack seems close to zero, despite admittedly being entertaining and refreshing. It's a mystery to me, why he ignores recent developments from Top-GM's which will heavily influence the way how the dragon is played on all levels.

It's indeed astonishing...

I always thought Mr. Ward was a lifelong advocate of the dragon, so a revival at toplevel of the dragon, he should be the first to shout out: "the dragon is alive, the dragon isn't refuted!!!"

To me it seems fair to all subscribers that every game at toplevel is analysed before lesser known games. Especially in the Kb1-variation but so far nearly nothing has happened, and it is not that Carlsen&Radja started playing the dragon 2 months ago...

And we all have been waiting quite a few updates for the topgames, so make work of it!!!

Presumably he is keeping all the best stuff for September's update, which will hopefully arrive in a day or two.

I agree 100%.

Perhaps he dislikes both Soltis and Soltis like lines. Even so,Carlsen-Radjabov was in Chinese variation and Svidler-Radjabov was 9 0-0-0.

The only game that interested me in this update was Nukin-Georgescu sicne I have tried that line as black in some recent blitz games.
