Here are a couple of other rare and probably unsound but interesting sidelines:

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 g6 6.Be3 Bg7 7.f3 Nc6 8.Qd2 0-0 9.Bc4

1) 9...Rb8

and

2) 9...Bd7 10.0-0-0 (of course there's the important 10.h4 and 10.Bb3 variations) 10...b5

Nice game, but what does it change against the fashionable 12.Kb1 variation ?

Look at the attached game where white played 10.h4 I really believe in lines with Na5 rather than Ne5. My opponent is a fearsomely strong SIM
and a dragon expert.

If you really want to go for a surprisevariation the following is a good idea:

5.Nc3 g6 6.Fe3 Bg7 7.f3 Nc6 8.Qd2 0-0 9.Bc4 Bd7 10.0-0-0 Qb8!?

I really like this move, the idea is a b5 pawnsac followed by Tc8 and all black pieces are faced against the white king. Black also has several other different dangerous ideas at his disposal.
Only if white knows 11.Nd5 (like Leko-Fedorov) black has some worries, in other lines white can be crushed. (see eg. games of Leonid Stein)

And watch out, against 10.h4 black can't play this variation!

What do you think of this variation : 5.Nc3 g6 6.Fe3 Bg7 7.f3 Nc6 8.Qd2 0-0 9.Bc4 Bd7 10.0-0-0 Rc8 11.Bb3 Nxd4 12.Bxd4 b5
Edward Dearing gives now 4 continuations for White  A:13.e5 B:Bxa7 C:h4 and D:Nd5 any experience with this line ?

I think white is better in the Nd5 variation (if he knows what he is doing). All other lines are harmless. I have seen many games where blacks inisiative is simply nullified by accurate moves and the e pawn gets weak and or h file attacks gets strong. But at mortal levels, the line is playable. And If I dont missremember Topalov played black agianst Shirov in some games in this line.

If you realy want to surprise and doeesnt care about soundes there is also 9 __ Nd7 variation. The idea is to get a Knight so c4 via b6 and in some cases play d5. Dont ask me for variations, I have only seen a few games.

The line 9.Bc4 Bd7 10.0-0-0 Rc8 11.Bb3 Ne5 12.h4 h5 13.Bg5 b5!? is a good choice. Your opponents will be surprised. I have 2/3 with it in long time games at a level of 2200-2400. The main line is 13.Ndxb5 Qb6 14.Nd4 Rc5 15.Bxf6 Bxf6 16.Nd5 Rxd5 and although White is an exchange and pawn up after recapturing, Black has huge compensation after both 17.exd5 a5 or 18.Bxd5 Rb8.
See http://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1115126356 for details.

Of course you need something against 12.Kb1 as well. Maybe 12.Kb1 Nc4 13.Bxc4 Rxc4 14.g4 b5 15.b3 b4 would fit your style. See http://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1200419719.

Looking for 9.Bc4 Dragon sideline as Black

Hello,

I'm looking for a variation as Black in the 9.Bc4 branch, with decent surprise value at U2100 and good attacking chances, even if the line is theoretically unsound.

I've found something similar against 9.0-0-0 with the 15...Rb8!? variation. I'd rather go for Soltis' set-ups.

Do you have any suggestions ?
