(3) In the comparable position 6 f4 e6 7 Nf3 Nge7 8 0-0 0-0 (8 ...Nd4 could reach S--K) 9 Be3 Nd4, is 10 e5!? the best plan?
After 10. e5  the simple 10.., dxe5 is strong.
Thanks for all the responses -- very useful. I've now got my head around most (I won't say all!) of the possible transpositions, of which there are not a few! (As well as the positions being reached via both the 6 Be3 and the 6 f4 move orders, it seems Black can also reach them by playing ...e6 before ...d6, and then ...Qa5 and ...Nd4 in either order.)

To this would-be Closed Sicilian neophyte three questions then come to mind:

(1) What's the refutation of Short's 11 e5?
(2) If 11 e5 is dubious what then is the best line/plan? 11 a3 0-0 12 Nh4?
(3) In the comparable position 6 f4 e6 7 Nf3 Nge7 8 0-0 0-0 (8 ...Nd4 could reach S--K) 9 Be3 Nd4, is 10 e5!? the best plan?
Regarding (1) and (2), Palliser likes 11. e5 but thinks White is struggling for compensation after 11...de 12. Nxe5 0-0 13. Rae1 Nxe5 14. fe Bxe5 15. Bh6 Bg7 16. Bxg7 Kxg7 17. Qf2 f6, rather than 17...f5 as given by Short.  He prefers 13. Nxc6 (which he attributes to Emms) and seems to think White is better after either 13...Nxc6 14. Qf2 or 13...bc 14. Qf2.  (He fleshes this all out a bit.)

Regarding (3), 10. e5 has been considered the main line for about the last 20 years, but doesn't seem necessarily to be "best."

It's very difficult to answer your question (3), but as a player on the black side, I can tell you that 10.e5 is annoying to meet  Smiley

Is there anything wrong with 7.Qd2 Qa5 8.f4 e6 9.Nf3 Ne7 10.0-0 Nec6 for White?  If memory serves, Short tried 11.e5 against Kasparov at one of the Wijk aan Zees and wound up with a good position.

That game is the basis of ECO's main line; Palliser has various things to say about the line, such as viewing Short's pawn sac as dubious.

I still think this line is easier to play as black; not a good sign.
Smyslov's 7. Qc1!? doesn't look ideal either.

Oh, by the way, I think it was pointed out in an earlier thread (by MNb, maybe?) that Smyslov tried 7.Qc1!? in this position.

After

1. e4   c5
2. Nc3  Nc6
3. g3   g6
4. Bg2 Bg6
5. d3   d6
6. Be3 Nd4

Both Emms (p. 11, line B) and Palliser (p. 128 line B) say that 7.Qd2 "transposes elsewhere," but I'm not inclined to track it down at the moment.  However, I can't find 7...Qa5, although it's possible it's in there somewhere.

Lane (2001) doesn't so much as mention 6 ...Nd4. Anyone care to suggest White's best treatment?

Cripes - don't get too carried away by stats.Sigh...

Resources: any closed sicilian book : Palliser, Lane. Opening repertoire for white book by Emms.

All pieces on the board. Long way to go.

Closed sicilian line - just equal?

1. e4   c5
2. Nc3  Nc6
3. g3   g6
4. Bg2 Bg6
5. d3   d6
6. Be3 Nd4
7. Qd2 Qa5

Does white have anything in this line?   Chessbase says that black is doing well after 6. Nd4. - whatever white plays

Any comments/suggestions?

Thanks.
