Thats seems to bee the general opinion Smiley. Howevever I wish that everyone I meet would allow me to play the Dragon as black in every single game since in many sharp Dragon postions it is easy to beat (or draw by force) much stronger players, especielly vs untitled players.

I did some analysis of the game against Vachier Lagrave here:
http://openingtheory.wordpress.com/annotated-games/vachier-lagrave-kasimdzhanov/

It didn't look to me like White got much after 18.Rxh5!?, but I think I found a good improvement in the 18.Nce2! line, at some point playing f4 instead of Qxa5.  There are also some interesting exchange sacs to play instead of just capturing on g3 (not just a temporary one like 18.Rxh5), but it appears to me that simpler is better.  Basically it really reminds me of the Polgar game.

Who knows if Vachier-Lagrave even prepared it. Probably he did, but he's certainly a strong enough tactician to find the idea himself OTB. He probably didn't, but from what I've seen of his play, he could have easily found this idea.  Grin

17...g3 has been played first in a game Rudolf-Lichmann, German youth championship 2008. Here, the white player did not find 18.Rxh5. This is Rybka's and Fritz' first choice however.

So my guess would be, that lots of white players had this novelty prepared. And the Australian junior was the lucky one to get the chance to play this move first. In fact, Mr. Vachier-Lagrave could have seen this game from TWIC 764 (published 29.6.2009), if he not had prepared this move before himself.

Whether or not the Dragon is dead now, or a bit more dead, as Rogers seems to imply, is still a different story.

Edit: I agree with brasjego that the Vachier Lagrave vs. Kasimdzhanov game was far from clear after move 23. On the other side, the Muller-Goundar game had ended abruptly after a blunder at move 20. So, in order to correct Mr. Rogers: In my opinion, the Aussie juniors game tells almost nothing about the future of this line.

Edit 2: What I mean is: In order to make this line not playable for black, you have to refute all of the alternatives 17... g3 and 17... Qf6 and 17... Bh8, at least.

Well, I am not surprised that Rxh5 was played at all since else blacks gets away with hes play. However I still dont think that this line gives white any advantage at all after Kasimdzhanov 20 .. Bf6 instead of your posts losing fast move. Shure black lost but he could hade forced a draw by playing pawn to h3.

This is in reference to Vachier-Lagrave vs Kasimdzhanov's game at san Sebastian. (caveat: I have not really look into the database to see what is a novelty and what is not. Perhaps someone can do that?)

Retired GM Ian Rogers has written in the Sydney Sunday paper, Sun Herald, about the story of an Australian junior, Jonas Muller, who may have inadvertently played himself into chess history with his novelty refuting a main Dragon line. The game was played at the Oceania Zonal

Ian Rogers' commentary: The old alternative to 17...g3 is 17...Kh7 which "has also been found wanting in previous games but the text move was supposed to be fine for Black - until now ... 18 Rxh5!

Ian Rogers said that 2 weeks later, Vachoer-Lagrave picked up the idea, possibly from TWIC, and used it to gain a point from Kasimdzhanov at San Sebastian.

Any comments on this? Has an Aussie junior finally made chess history in the Sicilian Dragon?

Well according to Fritz 10 running on an older computer (I am not at home)  black has a major improvment at move 27 , pawn to h3 seems to hold the balance. After Kh7 black is lost. However white might have even better moves before. Also the white player has more than 2700 in ELO.

The reason for the novelty was perhaps to avoid whites best line after Qf6 is 17. Rdg1 Qf6 18. fxg4 Bxh6 19.
Qxh6 Qg7 20. Qe3 Nf6 21. g5 Nh5 22. Ndb5 Bxb5 23. Nxb5 Red8 24. Qxa7 and white is at least slighlty better. Comparing to Soltis main line where white king is at c1 there is no check at f4 after Qxh6.

Kb1 is ideed whites most challanging move Smiley.

But black can avoid it if he wiches since white can not force black to enter this line. Some strong players play flexible like if 10 0-0-0 chinese (Rb8), if 10 Bb3 Nxd4 11 Bd4 b5 system (not refuted yet). h4 is of couse meet by h5 and regular Soltis and meeting any later Kb1 (except Bg5 Rc5 Kb1) with Nc4 transposing to Anand-Kasparov.

Also other strong players plays Rc8 Nxd4 b5 system.

When both Grischuk and Carlsen played it first time, that was surprise. When Radjabov and Svidler also played it it became trendy.  And Kasimdzhanov joined the trend Smiley.  The Bc4 yugoslav lines are more tactial but 9 0-0-0 black usaully plays d5 for soundness, even throught they may be less sound than most sicilians. Right now the Dragon is trendy, next year maybe back to the shadows again, who knows?

EDIT Also I predicted that the dragon should return to toplevel agian several years ago when Dragon was hiding in the shadows. After all Dragon has been played as black by some great players like Kasparov,Anand,Topalov and Ivanchuk and do to out of trend they switched to Najdorf and now Dragon is trendy and some other great players switch sicilian to Dragon.
