You haven't given Captain Evans' 4.b4 a thought yet?
I agree that 4.c3 after 3...Bc5 is more flexible. Then 4...Nf6 5.d3 leads to a relatively quiet game. If you instead want to play 5.d4 and also decide to play 3...Nf6 4.d4 you strongly should consider playing 3.d4 or even 2.d4:

1.e4 e5 2.d4 (or 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.Bc4) exd4 3.Bc4 Nc6 4.Nf3 Nf6 5.e5 (5.0-0 Nxe4 6.Re1 d5 7.Bxd5 Qxd5 8.Nc3 Qh5 is very drawish) or 4...Bc5 5.c3 Nf6 are transpositions. The reason is that in the Closed Italian 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.c3 Qe7 5.d4, the Hungarian 3.Bc4 Be7 4.d4 and the Philidor 2...d6 3.d4 Black does not have to take pawn d4 but can maintain the stronghold on e5. Moreover 2.d4 exd4 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Nf3 is the interesting Urussov Gambit, offering a solution for the Petrov; note 4...Nc6 5.e5 with another transposition.

If you decide to play the Giuoco Pianissimo though (3.Bc4 Bc5 4.c3 Nf6 5.d3) you might consider 3...Nf6 4.d3 as well. Black's extra options are 4...d5; 4...h6 (idea 5...g6) and 4...Be7.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

4.c3 of course, and then you can still play 5.d3 to reach the calm way of playing the Italian, or 5.d4!?

4.Ng5 is a strong move but I think you have to know the theory to not let Black with an easy game. 4.d4 followed by e5 is very interesting, it's "modern" and more positionnal (White play on the black squares "calmy" and can increase the pressure to get an attack) than any other line of the 2 knights.

Ok that was just my thoughts of course!

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.c3 or d3?

I have been looking to add the Italian Game as white to my repertoire,
except I do not know whether to learn the 4.d3 lines, or whether I should stick with 4.c3.

Thanks in Advance

Also, what is the recommendation for the Two Knights Defense at move for White, I already know 4.d4 and a little bit of 4.Ng5, but is either better?
