Name of variation:" French Winawer - poisoned pawn variation" (Nimzowitsch naming is better for other variations)

Black has two plans to follow, I prefer the second one:

A) 15...ooo 16.Rb1 (theatening the well-known Qxa6 against ooo with a6) Na5 17.Ne2! (best to counter Na4)

A1) 17...Na4 18.h5 Bc6 19.Nd4 (blockade idea I gave in my previous post) Nxd4 20.Qxd4 and advantage to White; position is good training for playing line as White or Black ... my point of view if White plan is simpler: push h pawn, when rook leaves g file then Bd3, reaching position where Black as small space to block h pawn and White can swap wings for his rooks...Black usual counterplay vs king or c file (and c2 pawn) becaus knight on c4 misplaced

I add that 19.Rb4 will lead to analysed positions with important game Hort-Nogueiras, Rotterdam 1989: 19.Rb4 Bb5 20.a4 Qc5! (novelty of game) and some recent chesspublishing updates in 2008 about that line...but I am confident for Black: 21.Ba3! Bc6 22.Qc3 Qa7! 23.a5 Kb8 (Hort-Nogueiras,Biel 1988) 24.h6 Rg6 (one main square: Black will attack h pawn while keeping g file under contol) 25.h7 Rh8= Compare with 9.Nd4: Black is in control of d4 square, h pawn is attacked after Rg7

A2)  17...Qc5 18.Be3! and Black has no good position going to a queenless ending

A3) 17...Bb5 18.Qc3 is only small advantage to White

B) 15...Rc8 16.Rb1 Nce7! (the other Black plan: play along the c-file) 17.Bd2 Bc6 18.h5 (nothing to be done on the other wing...main plan is h pawn push) Nh6 19.Rg3! Rxg3 20.Qxg3 (queen threatening to invade
on g7 square and support h pawn advance) Nef5 21.Qh3! d4 22.Nd1 Qd8 23.g4 (23.Nf2? Ne3!! Psakhis-Uhlmann,Tallin 1987) Ng4 (Korchnoi-Nogueiras,Bruxelles 1984) 24.Rb3 Ba4

What do you think about this line? 13. Nxc3 a6 14. h4 Nf5 15. Rh3

The idea is to integrate the rook into the fight.

Welcome Kiffing..
Start of a huuuuuugggge thread ?  Smiley
There are many lines and sublines (and game can deviates, before moves you gave).

Main moves are: 13.Qxc3 and 13.Nxc3..but 13.Rg1 was in fashion just last year...and subject of chesspublishing update december 2007 and I recorded two games are reference games: Svidler-Berg,Heraklion 2007 Shirov-Shulman,Kharly-Mansiyisk 2007.

I sent email last year to McDonald about specific Tait's variation (with Rb1 and Rg1 for White and ooo for Black) ... and ideas has been published in one update.

Move 13.Nxc3 was is in favor in Khalifman's book about French with the specific line 13...a6 14.Ne2!?. Basic plans for White is push of h pawn and blockade of d4 square (goal for Ne2). Black must think long time before choosing ooo or Rc8 move...and here vs Nxc3, maybe Rc8 is safer.

Move 13.Qxc3 is best countered with 13...Nf5, because challenge of d4 blockade is surely best, and Black threat to invade White camp with a rook if White plays is main plan with h4.

This is standard theory.
Best look at a chess book first, then come back here with further queries.

Psakhis
John Watson
McDonald and Harley

good places to start.

Ich had a question: Is it better in this French-Nimzowitsch-Line to capture the pawn c3 with the knight or with the queen? 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Bb4 4. e5 c5 5. a3 Bxc3+ 6. bxc3 Ne7 7. Qg4 Qc7 8. Qxg7 Rg8 9. Qxh7 cxd4 10. Ne2 Nbc6 11. f4 Bd7 12. Qd3 dxc3 Where are the better plans, ideas and lines?
