Well, Black sometimes intentionally "drops" the d6-pawn in such Benoni-ish positions -- for example in a major line of the Averbakh; 5. Bf4 can lead to something similar.

A thematic idea is ...Nc6 (perhaps preceded by castling), with the idea of meeting d5 by ...e5.

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5. Bf4!?

ive had a curious amount of trouble against this which is reasonably popualr at aroun 1800 level.

can anybody recommend a good line/explain why its not listed as even a minor alternative?

the thing is, it makes for a slightly awkard benoni because e6 can lead to the d6 pawn dropping

ive tried Nh5 but after Be3, the knight seems misplaced and be2 forces it to move again effectively gaining tempo for white

any ideas??
