Any update on the 2024 cumulative database?

Yes, it's finally online, I had to wait for the last two December updates first.
Just a reminder that all subscribers can use the PGN Games Archive to download any recent games they don't have, using the 'Added Since' date box. This is always totally up-to-date. Smiley

I downloaded all ChessPublishing games for 2021 as a CBV file, imported them to ChessBase, copied and pasted all 2021 ECO A games into my ChessBase file for ECO A, and so on for ECO B, C, D, and E.

I downloaded all ChessPublishing games for 2021 as a PGN file, imported them to Chess Opening Wizard, selected all 2021 ECO A games and imported them into my Chess Opening Wizard file for ECO A, and so on for ECO B, C, D, and E.

You can download all the 2022 games now  Smiley I was just waiting for the last two 2022 updates before sorting out the Complete games download for the last year.

My minimum threshold for making a post: something that I find more interesting that a picture of what I had for dinner last night. Check!

I also made a Chess Opening Wizard file for all ChessPublishing games for 2021, and moved it over to my cheap 8" tablet with Chess Opening Wizard. The tablet version of Chess Opening Wizard is limited, for example, no engine. Yet I do have 1164 annotated games, ECO A00 to ECO E99. Surely their is something there to keep my mind occupied while I wait in an office, etc.

You should download all the games from the PGN Archive (or the one stop download if you have access to all 12 sections) and put them in one reference database. Then it only takes an instant to see these references if you have ChessBase.

I can confirm that.

I also use Chess Opening Wizard and the games (PGN) import well there also.

When playing through games in one of the monthly up-dates the author often quotes games from previous columns with the comment "see archives".

Is there a simple and quick way of finding the game or do I need to search through all the previous columns using the opening code as the only reference?

so in say Chessbase you would go to the game:

Would the free 'ChessBase Reader 2013' work - I have CB12 here but I assume the free Reader would work? If it did that might help user without the paid Chessbase?

Yes, the free CB reader (or previous CB Light) works just fine, as do all the CB engines (Fritz, say).

It depends on whether they are 'new style' (updated regularly) or 'old style' (not). We like them but they haven't proved particularly popular - probably because you need Windows and ChessBase to use them. Sad
I find using the ChessPub Guides + games easier than using the PDF files + games myself.

Hi Tony,

So you miss out the pdf completely? Just to make sure I am understanding, so in say Chessbase you would go to the game:

White: Tarrasch 3...Be7 4.Ngf3
Black: Intro

which is a ChessPub Guide.

Would the free 'ChessBase Reader 2013' work - I have CB12 here but I assume the free Reader would work? If it did that might help user without the paid Chessbase?

Thanks for explaining the gap - my son tends to flick between the pdf and the 'game' in Chessbase as he finds that most comfortable*. So it's a good thing I went to the game archives.

i.e. He was looking at the French (Tarrasch) eBook and we discovered if you searched for surname Tarrash in Chessbase all the games were there.

* I assume this makes sense

P.S. It would seem that the playable eBooks would be the easiest to use but these don't appear to always be updated i.e. Tarrash playable eBook was last updated 16th September 2004?

Hi

I went to the GoldPlus -> one stop download area, downloaded all the games and created a single database

16/01/2014  23:17         6,615,935 chesspuba.cbv
16/01/2014  23:17        11,921,629 chesspubb.cbv
16/01/2014  23:17         6,110,372 chesspubc.cbv
16/01/2014  23:17         7,083,828 chesspubd.cbv
16/01/2014  23:17         5,332,919 chesspube.cbv
               5 File(s)     37,064,683 bytes

This had 19,589 games (slightly less than I expected)?

So I tried downloading the games via the PGN Games Archive

16/01/2014  23:22         4,011,614 pgn_1-d4-d5.zip
16/01/2014  23:19         2,705,882 pgn_1-e4-e5.zip
16/01/2014  23:21         3,005,216 pgn_1-e4.zip
16/01/2014  23:21         2,163,072 pgn_Anti-Sicilians.zip
16/01/2014  23:22         2,525,632 pgn_d-Pawn-Specials.zip
16/01/2014  23:22         3,356,672 pgn_Daring-Defences.zip
16/01/2014  23:20         2,206,336 pgn_Dragons.zip
16/01/2014  23:22         2,591,278 pgn_Flank-Openings.zip
16/01/2014  23:19         2,589,591 pgn_French.zip
16/01/2014  23:22         2,846,240 pgn_Kings-Indian.zip
16/01/2014  23:22         2,413,082 pgn_Nimzo-Benoni.zip
16/01/2014  23:21         3,564,437 pgn_Open-Sicilians.zip
              12 File(s)     33,979,052 bytes

This totalled 21,366 games  (21,335 after de-duping in CB12 (exact match names/tournament/moves)).

It looks like the one stop download is missing some games?

Ok, I've now added all the 2011 games so the 'one stop update' is really up-to-date! Cheesy

I've just updated this with all the 2012 games, so you can download all the games in one go if you have access to 'Gold Plus'. Smiley

There is also a file containing just the 2012 update games for those who want to update their existing database more quickly.

Oh, and Happy New Year to everyone! Smiley

Yes, but as they change so often there doesn't seem to be much point adding them to the download.
Besides, it takes about two seconds to download them all from the PGN Archive.

This is fine, no problem. Just downloaded 913 guides. I don't want to miss out on something, hence my previous topic on workflow.

I've just added the last December update games, and a few stray older games that missed out, so the 'one stop update' should now be complete up till January 2011! Smiley

Ok, I've now added all the 2011 games so the 'one stop update' is really up-to-date! Cheesy There is also a file containing just the 2011 update games for those who want to update their existing database more quickly.
Please note: I used ChessBase 11 to do it this time around, which may be an improvement ... or not! Anyway, it seems to add columns for theoretical weight and 'Top Game' when it feels like it, which probably makes the downloads a bit bigger.
I removed all the team info from the main files as there is a known bug in ChessBase which messes these up. However, I did leave this info in the 2011 games download so you have the choice whether you want it or not! Undecided
Also, I used their 'improve players names' tool which, again, may or may not be a good thing. I noticed a few strange results of this myself (like the World Champion only being 2400!) but altered any mistakes that I saw.

OK, I've just updated the Gold Plus one stop download. All the 2010 update games have been added except for the December Anti-Sicilians, which I'll add when I receive it. Smiley

Immediately after putting Neil's December update online I updated the 'one click download' which now includes all the annotated games till the end of 2009. Smiley

Any chance of a single file download for games added in 2009 to simply update the one step download?

Yep, that's done too. Cheesy

Well, I went thru the motions of downing +140 files yesterday, so you can probably wait for the late december guys - and perhaps remind them about fide's zero tolerance ideas! Wink

Well, not really, I think the idea is just to have all the sections for a cheaper price. Wink

That's a good idea! I am waiting for the last two December updates to arrive before updating the one-step download ... or should I do it straightaway?!  Undecided

If you go to the pgn games archive page (which you really need to know about to find) you can download the entire sections.  This seems to be automatically up to date, so you can always download all of these (or indeed non-gold subscribers can get it)

Go to here once you are logged in: http://www.chesspublishing.com/php/ or on one of the section pages there is a link in the list on the right.
