Would someone please explain to me how this line is supposed to work for Black?  I particularly can't see what Black is supposed to do after 3.d4.

It was proposed that he should play 3..e6, and if 4.c4 then 4...Qe7 although other moves are possible.   That was TalJechin's original idea.  The Queen makes way for the Knight to retreat to d8 and of course it may end up on f7.  One controversial line was 4.d5 exd5 5.Qxd5 and now the sensible move is probably 5...Bb4+ 6.Nc3 d6 or 6.c3 Nge7, however someone brought up that 5...Nf6 6.Qxf5 d5 7.Qd3 would be a BDG with White playing whatever the 5...Qd6 defense is called.

This was eventually discussed in this thread http://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1098049385/0
