Ah, thanks.  I came across the Wichmann game yesterday, but it didn't remind me of anything (and caused me to think, "is this really resignable?").  But now I do remember the Prusikin game.  I notice that the 2009 DEM website makes no mention (at least in the relevant round report) of the 2007 precedent.

3 more times.

Those who want to go by my perverse footsteps play such pawn structure with fuzzy atypical still strategic orientations

This is a small compilation of games by German GM Rainer Buhmann. How often will his opponents fall into the same trap? The first game I want to show was played today.

Boehle,Lars (2257) - Buhmann,Rainer (2565) [D45]
Pfalz open (2), 16.02.2009

1.d4 d5 2.Sf3 c6 3.c4 e6 4.e3 Sf6 5.Dc2 Sbd7 6.Sc3 Ld6 7.b3 0-0 8.Le2 e5 9.cxd5 Sxd5 10.Sxd5 cxd5 11.dxe5 Sxe5 12.0-0 (??)

I knew that I had seen the very same by him a couple of days ago... as you see, the trap works with colours reversed as well:

Buhmann,Rainer (2565) - Wichmann,Cliff (2389) [D05]
DEM 2009 Saarbruecken (3), 08.02.2009

1.Sf3 d5 2.d4 c5 3.c3 e6 4.e3 Sc6 5.Sbd2 Sf6 6.Ld3 Dc7 7.0-0 b6 8.e4 Le7 9.Te1 cxd4 10.Sxd4 Sxd4 11.cxd4 dxe4 12.Sxe4 0-0 (??)

13.Sxf6+ Lxf6 14.Dh5 1-0

But already last week I thought, that I must have seen this motif in one of his games before. I was not mistaken: It happened in the penultimate round of the German Championship 2007, thus quite an important game for both players. (No diagramm necessary as the game is identical to the very first I gave.)

Prusikin,Michael (2571) - Buhmann,Rainer (2547) [D45]
GER-ch Bad Koenigshofen (8), 26.01.2007

1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Sf3 Sf6 4.Sc3 e6 5.e3 Sbd7 6.Dc2 Ld6 7.b3 0-0 8.Le2 e5 9.cxd5 Sxd5 10.Sxd5 cxd5 11.dxe5 Sxe5 12.0-0 Sxf3+ 13.Lxf3 Dh4 14.g3 Df6 15.Lxd5 Lf5 16.e4 Lh3 17.Td1 Le5 0-1

How many more victims will Buhmann find? I guess there might be some more. After all, the list of players (marked in bold text) falling to this double attack is long and already includes some well known players and at least 4 GMs:
  • Prusikin - Buhmann, 2007, 0:1 (see above)
  • Plachetka - Hasek, 2003, 0:1
  • Uhlmann - Mueller, 1998, ½:½.(Uhlmann escaping a piece down)
  • Portisch - Ribli 1985, 0:1

Hope you enjoyed!
