1.c4 c5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.g3 d5 4.cxd5 Nxd5 5.Bg2 Nc7 6.Nf3 Nc6 is generally considered somewhat better for White. So why should this line with colours reversed favour White too? Is the extra tempo that important? Just asking.

As far as I know, that English line is generally considered equal with best play.  It seems plausible that an extra tempo could shift the evaluation by "half a category"; the keeping-the-bishop-on-the-long-diagonal bit (see above) apparently plays a role in that shift.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

Reminiscent of the same sort of sac played by Black in the English, but where he has to play ...Be8 rather than keeping his bishop on the long diagonal ...

Hey. Thanks for posting my game. But, I almost never played the Accelerated Dragon before, and had no idea about the theory of this Nc2!? line. A lucky draw vs. the young guy, rated 2087, because I was clearly lost after blundering his 16.Qe2!.
Later I learned that the b4!? sacrifice was suggested by GM Chuchelov in Chess Informant.
Black often plays ...Nd7 early without ...Be6, and often even before the short castle. Better look for the recent top level games, between GMs at least - not 2400s vs 2000s.  Wink

About Nc2, where is whites advantage after something like (given by Experts vs the Sicilian)

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 g6 5. c4 Nf6 6. Nc3 d6 7. Nc2 Bg7 8. Be2 O-O 9. O-O Nd7 10. Bd2 a5 11. Na3
Nc5 12. Nab5 Nd4 13. Nxd4 Bxd4 14. Bh6 Bxc3 15. bxc3 Re8 *

Rybka 3 actually preferces black but calls is equal (-0.15).

9..Be6 is also mentioned by Davies in "the dynamic reti" where he prefers 10. Rb1 and refering to stein-daskalov and adorjan-parkanyi.

It's a main line in ECO, which thinks White should be slightly better.

Hi, this thread is about the assessment of the following position:

* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
*

A sample line to reach this position is
1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 g6 5. c4 Nf6 6. Nc3 d6 7. Nc2 Bg7 8. Be2 O-O 9. O-O Be6!?.

This position may be reached by various move orders and openings as the English or Réti opening, e.g.  1. Nf3 c5 2. c4 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 g6 5. e4 d6 6. Nc3 Nf6 7. Nc2 Bg7 8. Be2 O-O 9. O-O Be6.

The line with an early Nc2 is advocated by EvtS, but Nielsen only deals with 9...Nd7 and 9...Bd7, so 9...Be6 is interesting for black players who want to get white out of book.

So far I only did a quick database research and found various high level games, including one of our author Golubev. White has obviously various options, but black seems to be solid. Does somebody know theorys verdict on this position?
