Out of sheer perversity, in my case.  MNb can speak for himself.

It takes a lot before the level of a subject sinks too low to my taste. If it does I take a rest - a few days, sometimes two weeks - only to return with fresh energy. When someone like Sloughter has that special ability to irritate everyone I take pleasure to return that favour. I think I succeeded a few times. It shows bad taste, I know, but what is wrong with some bad taste now and then? It makes you appreciate good taste even better.
But I don't miss Sloughter's thread, GM Kosten imo was right to remove it. Moreover we have LDZ (Gambit) now on hot chicks.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

What, no more "Refutation of 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6?"  That thread was so entertaining.

For a while, it was really entertaining and funny to a certain extent. Mr. Sloughter/Richard certainly has an ability to irritate and infuriate everyone. It just got too far when everyone turned mad.

I only just realised that the thread was not locked but deleted.

Actually I haven't really deleted it, and I might bring it back when everyone calms down ... or if someone really annoys me!! Shocked

Because, for a while, it's a respite.  Alas, whilst you know that kind of thread on a forum is eventually going to erupt in violence, it always comes as a shock when it finally explodes.  Can't say I'm too sorry it's been deleted, posting as I am under my real name.

I only just realised that the thread was not locked but deleted.

Maybe it should have been allowed to stand as a monument to stupidity and futility.

Please don't.

That thread should have been locked about 20 pages ago.

Alas, the chess world will now stumble on in darkness, unaware that the Two Knights Defense is unsound.

A pity too, since I had just retreived my Waffen SS uniform from the trunk and sent it to the drycleaner's.  Most of you probably didn't know that I was an Obersturmfuhrer.  I had hoped that the ingenious sloughter would lead a revival, but now it's all gone for naught.

Perhaps someone could write a suiting version of the old Kinks Classic "DEATH OF A CLOWN" Wink:

My makeup is dry and it clags on my chin
I'm drowning my sorrows in whisky and gin
The lion tamer's whip doesn't crack anymore
The lions they won't fight and the tigers won't roar

La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
So let's all drink to the death of a clown
Won't someone help me to break up this crown
Let's all drink to the death of a clown
Let's all drink to the death of a clown

The old fortune teller lies dead on the floor
Nobody needs fortunes told anymore
The trainer of insects is crouched on his knees
And frantically looking for runaway fleas

La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Let's all drink to the death of a clown
So won't someone help me to break up this crown
Let's all drink to the death of a clown
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Let's all drink to the death of a clown
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la

Agreed.

And at the most climactic moment: sloughter had just destroyed reality itself.
