Maybe better said: black seems to have a freer hand on the queenside. (You'll learn rather quickly, I'm not the best at expressing myself most of the time...)

So, I guess black wants to play Na5 and a6 as soon as possible. That does seem to pretty severely limit white on the queenside...

Here is some sample lines of similar variations

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4
4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 g6 6. Be3 Bg7 7. f3 Nc6 8. Bc4 O-O 9. Qe2 (9. Bb3 Bd7 10.
Qe2 Na5 11. O-O-O a6 {must be good for black do that whites misplaced queen}) (
9. Qd2 Bd7 10. O-O-O Rc8 11. Bb3 Ne5 12. Qe2 {
have I actually meet at least once} a6 13. h4 Rxc3 14. bxc3 {etc and I got the
better postion and went on to win in some old internet blitz (or bullet) game
against a 2300 + player}) 9... Na5 {is a improvment over a game that i played
in swedish divsion 1 a couple of years ago that I managed to lose dispete that
I got the better position and had at least a draw before a endgame mistake} 10.
Bd3 (10. Bb3 e5 11. Ndb5 a6 12. Na3 b5 {and black is better}) 10... Bd7 11. O-O
a6 {about equal} *

it appears that white has gone for the traditional yugoslav setup but forfeited Qd2 in favour of Qe2!?. it is an interesting trade off, on d2 the queen pressurises the d file (in some lines the d7 bishop comes under fire after e5 breaks) and allows the e3 bishop to go to h6 to swap off the dangerous dragon bishop. from e2 the queen precludes much of black's traditional counterplay with b5 and Nc4 and makes g4 easier to achieve because of the extra protection for the f3 pawn that queen offers. on the negative side after ...a6 doesnt the d4 knight look alittle short of squares probably forcing the Q to move again and also the traditional Rxc3 sac may hold more bite with the Q on e2 forcing a b-pawn recapture. in my opinion the best counter in 10...na5 perparing a6 with the threat of e5, also bringing the option of Nxb3 into the picture.

9.Bb3 Bd7 10.Qe2 Na5

White now has several options
A) 11.0-0 a6   i dont like the look of this, its kindof like a 6.Bc4 line but with f3 instead of h3 which is not particularly beneficial in my opinion. in addition, white must move the queen again and it is actually quite difficult to see any active plan that whit may undertake apart from some sort of Nd5 Marco hop plan which in my opinion black is well placed to meet because he will get in b5 before the knight gets to d5, preventing the pawn that will get to d5 from being supported by c4. black has an obvious plan of counterplay on the Q side using his open file and b pawn to create threats.

Sure...

6 Be3 Bg7 7 f3 Nc6 8 Bc4 0-0 9 Bb3 Bd7 10 Qe2

And, I should probably rephrase my original post. I should ask if it is a good enough surprise weapon to do some preparation to play against it as black. (I won't be playing it as white, since I play the Closed Sicilian.)

A great surprise weapon indeed, as few people have ever heard of the Dragon, Nordic Variation. Would you mind posting the moves so that people around can help ?

I was wondering if there's anyone here who has experience with the Nordic Variation. I was wondering how well it may fare as a surprise weapon. I know Andrew Martin says in "Starting Out: The Sicilian Dragon" that "the last word has yet to be written," so, I wanted some thoughts from some who may have played it or played against it.
