Hi,

Maybe its a littlebit of topic, but why do all KID players seem to have Rybka instead of Fritz? I know that Fritz values material more than Rybka. Is that the difference?

Thanks

Presumably because Rybka is much higher rated than Fritz, has three engines ('normal' engine, Dynamic and Human) and more analysis features (e.g. Monte Carlo analysis). Fritz 12 is due to be released on October 7, but I would be very surprised if it competed with Rybka 3 in either playing strength or analysis.

All our dreams come true if we have the courage to pursue them.

I'd just like to say that I saw this book today and while the lines in it aren't my cup of tea it's clearly a labour of love and the sort of book to inspire people, help them score more points, etc. A book which is trying to make a difference, the sort we need more of.

I do just wonder how long this kind of thing can go on though. How many more rooms there are for us to go into, in Anand's phrase. When you see people convinced that their lines are best for both sides up to move 30, it's a bit depressing really, especially if they're anything like right.

no worry, just wait for rybka 4/5/6 and the story goes on

But classical KID is an opening where the real fight starts at move 18 or so. Therefore you can analyse very deep into the middlegame.

I had the chance to attend a nice lecture of a local expert on the 4PA from the Black side. His main line was 9...Nbd7 and he made astrong case for it presenting nice lines full of energy for Black. The only time i watched this move was a long time ago in the Ward's modern Benoni DVD. He mentioned also a nice idea of Watson's after 10.e5 (the main line) 10...Ne8 which could be an interesting alternative to the messy 10...dxe5.

All his lines seem nice when i put them in Rybka so my question is what ideas does Semkov has here? I don't have the book but i would be interested to discuss these analysis of the local expert and compare it to the book's.

Actually he does not go in for 10.e5. I did bring up Watson's recommendations before (page 6 of the discussion) and I hope you'll get some more constructive answers than I did.

But as to what sources were consulted, I'm not sure that's strictly relevant, since the lines considered by Semkov are either wholly original or are considered either unimportant by existing theory.  This is a work of original analysis akin to Monson's book on the Belgrade, though not as dense.

Also taken as a whole it is a complete repertoire, and so far I have found no obvious omissions of important Black ideas.  In fact he even says how he thinks White should treat the Modern and Old Indian.

Well, as far as I can see there's nothing on Watson's 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 d6 5. f4 O-O 6. Nf3 c5 7. d5 e6 8. Be2 exd5 9. cxd5 Nbd7 10. O-O Re8 11. Qc2 Qe7, there's nothing about Watson's 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 d6 5. f4 O-O 6. Nf3 c5 7. d5 e6 8. Be2 exd5 9. cxd5 Qe7.

Watson's alternative recommendation 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 d6 5. f4 O-O 6. Nf3 c5 7. d5 e6 8. Be2 exd5 9. cxd5 Bg4 10. O-O Nbd7 11. h3 Bxf3 12. Bxf3 Rb8 is only covered with a brief "transposes to another line", when it is at least not 100% clear to me that the transposition has to occur after 13.g4, as black could have some extra options.

I did find Watson's ideas pretty sensible looking, so it seems obvious enough to taken them seriously.

^Further to that, I see some reviews are turning up for this book now - very positive. Here is one on Silman's site, by Rotella:

Also, rip-roaring, open chess may not be to the taste of many who like Black's side of the ultra-closed Mar del Plata.

Having recently played in a tournament where 4 out of 5 games were KID's against me, I decided to buy this book. Your point above is IMO bang on, the KID players I know aren't going to like these positions with an opened up centre with white firing away with heavy pieces. It is not for faint of heart white players either - few slow endgames a pawn up here, not about positional queenside pressure like so many KID lines. This is all about using whites tempo / space to fight to the death through the middle in the middle game - a courageous way to play chess (esp. given it is for d4 players).

Reading this book, there is quite a bit to learn / memorize (as the lines are not always intuitive), but is manageable, and I have more time to learn it than a KID player does (who needs to stay on top of all the other variations). The beauty of these lines is that many are forcing - one mistake, and black is doomed to an inferior position with no easy way to "wing it".

I think KIL KID is a wonderful book - it inspires a lot of confidence, and while it is no doubt not perfect (no opening, or opening book, is), it is perfect enough IMO, that a lot of black KID players are going to be in a tooth and nail struggle just to stay on the board, rather than trying to expand into and bash away at my king. I couldn't have asked for more - great book, thanks Semkov.

I have Semkov's book, though not handy, and 7.Bd3 is indeed his recommendation.  Personally, just because of 7.Bd3, I think that 6...Na6 against the 4PA is not as good as 6...c5.

You know, the deep theory of 6...c5 7.d5 e6 8.Be2 exd5 9.cxd5 Re8 fails to support any claim of White advantage (the jury is still out on Semkov's interesting ideas).  It's just that it is all so complicated, and White has so many options at various stages, that keeping up with it all can be a major challenge for a KID player. From this point of view, the 4PA can be seen as a practical weapon more than a theoretical one.  The deep complexity of Black's best line is what discourages many Blacks from taking it up.

Also, rip-roaring, open chess may not be to the taste of many who like Black's side of the ultra-closed Mar del Plata.

New 4PA game from the current Brits Champs (annotations by IM Malcolm Pein):

S Williams - M Hebden

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.f4 0-0 6.Nf3 Na6 7.Bd3 e5 8.fxe5 dxe5 9.d5 c6 10.0-0 Nc5
(10...cxd5 11.cxd5 Ne8 12.Be3 Nd6 is another line)
11.Bc2 cxd5 12.cxd5 b6
(12...Ne8 looks better, Black's knight never gets into the game)
13.b4 Nb7 14.Bg5 Qd6 15.a3 Bd7 16.Bd3!
(16.Ba4 b5!=)
16...Rfc8
(16...Nc5 17.Bxf6 Bxf6 18.Bb5 a6 19.Bxd7 Nxd7 20.Rc1 with a positional advantages of a passed d5 pawn and superior minor pieces)
17.Rc1 a5 18.Qb3 axb4 19.axb4 Nh5
(19...Qb8 20.Qb2 Nh5 21.Bb5)
20.Nb5 Qf8
(20...Bxb5 21.Bxb5 and Rc6)
21.Nc7! Rab8 22.Ba6 Nf4
(22...Qd6 23.Nb5 Qf8 24.Rxc8 Bxc8 25.Be3 Qd8 26.Na7 but 25...Nd6 resists)
23.Bxf4 exf4 24.e5 Bg4 25.d6 Rd8
(25...Bxf3 26.Qxf3 wins the Nb7)
26.Ng5 Rd7
(26...Bxe5 27.Nxf7 Qxf7 28.Bc4)
27.Rxf4 Nxd6 28.exd6 Qxd6 29.Rxf7 Rxf7 30.Qxf7+ Kh8 31.Bc4 Qf6 32.Ne8 1-0

IM Pein said he was intrigued to find out what Williams would play as White since both Williams and Hebden were KID afficianados. And Williams chose the 4PA and won!

I don't have Semkov's book and therefore cannot tell how the game compares.

If somebody bothered to buy my book, he would have noted that I recommend 17 h5!, leaving the King on g1. This is a crucial tempo as I try to prove on about three pages. It is a pity that I spent weeks on that position, but things never came to it in the actual game as White deviated first.

Now Top Notch, does that wish for the revival of 4-Ps Attack spring from a more self-interested motive? I seem to remember you posting that you wish to see more of it from the black side ... Grin Grin

@Bibs, "thanks" for Computer search 101. Great stuff. Ever consider a career as a teacher? I am sure your students will love you and your so very English sense of humour (and "rightness").

BTW, if it is too much of hassle, you really should not trouble yourself and burn those calories by actually lifting your fingers to type and oh! exercise those neurons (or as that quintessential English concoction of a detective, Hercule Poirot, love to say, those leetle grey cells) as well. Seriously, you don't have to reply and no one would ever think the less of you.

As said before, much appreciated for tracking down the link to the game. And suddenly Parker-Radjabov gains so much more significance than it ever did before like those 5-minute celebrities.

Thanks for posting that game.

Could it be that the 4 Pawns Attack is due for a revival, I certainly hope so. Or perhaps Chess Stars has a Killed by The KID project already in the pipeline. Wink

As far as I know it's been accepted for at least several decades that Black should keep things fluid against the Benko Variation, i.e. he shouldn't play 11...f4 or 11...fg.  Possibly some of the people who played those moves would have done better with time to think.

Sure, that's why I put in the smiley. But in this case there may be some additional aspects: In this line the usual attack vs the white king simply does not happen. Additionally the average KID-Devotees (that I've met at least) usually  is not really a "patient" player Wink

Well ... maybe an important "features" of this line is, that it is not used very often. If the analysis in the book is correct (no checks done), there's a relatively easy way for black to equalize.

I would like to share my impressions in internet-blitz-games with a line mentioned in the book, the KI-classical with f3 and g4
(1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.Nf3 O-O 6.Be2 e5 7.O-O Nc6 8.d5 Ne7 9.Ne1 Nd7/e8 10.f3 f5 11.g4)

What I did is reading the chapter (not at all learning the line), trying to remember the plans, and playing it in blitz games. This is what I usually do to test a line that is a candidate for "repertoire-change".
The idea simply is to get to know wether I "feel" the position or not.
Afterwards I asked serveral opponents if they liked that line or not

Currently the number of games may be about 50, so it it limited, but I guess not worthless. The opponents were rated between 1900 and about 2250 at the server.

- Lower rated players and those that didn't know the line usually either played
- 11...f4 without closing the queenside (with lets say ...c5) which IMHO more or less automatically leads to a white win
- 11...fxg4 after which the usual kingside counterplay more or less is gone. Those games had a higher percentage of draws due to the fact that there is just one open file, where sometimes the heavy artillery was exchanged. Whites risk to lose the game  in that line IMHO is about zero. He plays with a secure draw in hands with a slight advantage for a win.

The higher rated player sometimes outplayed me due to my lacking theoretical knowledge, especially in the line with 11...Kh8.

More or less everybody (who answered me) said that he / she disliked the resulting positions (Because they are "boring" and similar stuff Smiley  ).

All this convinces me that the line is a good idea for positional players to incorporate them into their repertoire.

Er, it was Parker-Radjabov.

Sorry about that. I just saw it on the Live Games section of the tournament website the other day. Unfortunately, there was another round yesterday and the Live Games has been replaced (obviously). The current Live Game has Giri-Bitalzdeh which Giri won. As mentioned, I cannot locate the pgn. There are some games on Chessvibes http://www.chessvibes.com/reports/only-spoelman-still-on-100-in-hilversum/ but unfortunately not this particular game. It is Rd 4. May just have to wait for TWIC, I think.

The reason I posted this was something that happened during the Oceania Zonal where in a Live Blog (at http://closetgrandmaster.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html, a 4-pawns game appeared and a spectator commented on 4-pawns attack in general, saying it was rarely played. I made the comment: expect more since the publication of the book "Kill the KID". Then I saw the Giri-Nijboers game and I thought, hang on! is this a pattern? Giri, a junior trotting out the 4-pawns. In the Ocenia Zonal the player who trotted out the 4-pawns was also a junior.

Here is that game (mind you B is only 1500ish):

Hey guys. Mr. Semkov, I love your book.

In a blindfold training game with a friend, he came up with this: 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 d6 5. f4 0-0 6. Nf3 Na6 7. Bd3 c5 8. d5 Nc7 9. 0-0  9...Nd7!? 10. Be3 e6 11. Qd2 b5!?. What do you guys think?

The game continued 12. dxe6 fxe6 13. Nxb5 Nxb5 14. cxb5 Nf6 15. h3 (he tells me Rybka likes 15. Bc4! with a clear advantage to white) and I (white) went on to win.

Thoughts? I'm a bit confused about all this. His idea looks kind of original?

Well after 18...Nd4 19.Rxf6 Bf6 20.Ne4 ,  Bg7 is not the best. Actually after 20...Bg7 white can get a small plus after 21.Nac5 Rf8 22. d7 Bd7 23.Nd7 Ne2 24.Qe2 Rf5 25. g4 Qb5 26.Qb5 Rb5 27 Ndf6 +=

IDEA will actually help you keep all your analysis in tree structure, automate your analysis, and just enchanche the experience of interactive analysis. For example more than 80% of your analysis in the book for e6,d6 variation was created using IDEA without ANY user interaction in about 5-6 days(and nights).

You know, the problem is that engines generate a lot of stuff, but the difficult thing is to guide them in the right direction and then to assess correctly what they say. I remember when I checked analysis of the PP in the Najdorf. Even after  a day rybka kept insisting that White should resign while he had obviously a tremendous attack.

The general procudure , is leave at night to get variations, then interact ... (which separates the man from boys).

Once you try it i think you will love it.

In any case i really like all chess-star book. They are of very high quality

No, I have not tried IDEA. I try to generate my ideas and then I check them with Rybka. If you ask Rybka, it does not put 13...Qb6 even in the first 4 choices, so it's ideas about such an unbalanced position are not too helpful. But, of course, using it as an opponent in the analysis is obligatory.

Sorry,
As for the Markovich's line ("I'm still searching for White's advantage after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.f4 0–0 6.Nf3 c5 7.d5 e6 8.Be2 exd5 9.cxd5 Re8 10.e5 dxe5 11.fxe5 Ng4 12.e6 fxe6 13.d6 Qb6 14.Ng5 Nf6 (a move not considered by Semkov) 15.0-0 Nc6"), it did not seem so challenging to me. If I were to reach to the endgame every possible branch, a lifetime would not be enough. That's what you - the readers - are for. Do not be lazy. There are plenty of ideas to check. The first thing to start with is probably 16 Na4 Qb4 17 Rf4 Qa5 18 Kh1!? h6 19 Ne4 Nxe4 20 Rxe4 Rf8  This was the main suggestion of Rybka and then: 21 Be3 Nd4 22 Rg4! Kh7 23 Nxc5 e5 24 Rxg6! winning. Of course, this is not forced, but it shows how many possibilities we can find in that position.

Much better leading to equality is

18...Nd4 19.Bf1 Bd7 20. Nc5 Qc5 21.Rxd4 Rac8  (19 b4 Qb4 20. Bd2 Qa3 =;19.Rxf6 Bf6 20.Ne4 Bg7=+;19.Bd2 Qd8 =+Wink is at least equal and most of all easy to play

Just a question. Do you know the tool "IDEA" inside Aquarium? Have you ever used it for such work? If no try it and you will never look back again.

Sorry, Toppy, but if you compare my book with another one on the FPA, you'll notice that they do not overlap even at a page. If that is not a new approach these days, I do not know what it should be at all.

My own suspicion is that at the end of the day, the 4PA will continue to be a serious practical challenge to the KID, but still not a theoretical challenge.

@ Toppy: I don't know that anything arising from 1...d6 2.Nf3 is very critical, since one could, and I imagine many 4PA specialists would, play 2.e4.

I had already made a FPA IDEA tree using Aquarium (if you are familiar about that)  and i compared the findings of this work to Semkov's.

For now i have just limited comparison to Re8 variations, and i have to say that it pointed out some variations i missed. Since the IDEA tree is much more extensive (and i guess Semkov's analysis have not all reached the book edition), there are many more critical variations. The only thing we disagree is the verdict. The positions leads to a draw, although indeed white is on top, its a draw. Not that Semkov says smthg different there. In page 62 he says " i have a feeling the white can improve somehow....."

In any case, this is a great tool in studying. I hope Semkov accepts suggestions..

My copy finally came today.

From a quick perusal it looks to be a real labor of love and an important work. Neverless I have already found a hole in one of the major lines, namely 9...Nbd7, I spotted it immediately because this is one of my back up lines vs the FPA and as Semkov's recommendation was already suggested by reknowned FPA specialist Anatoli Vaisser many years ago, I had an antidote ready.

There is also a weakness in the coverage of one of the deviations: In particular the tranposition to the Classical KID!, yes the Classical did manage to make a cameo appearance after all Wink The line goes:

1.d4 d6 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.c4 g6 4.Nc3 Bg7 5.e4 0-0 6.Be2 e5 7.Be3 Nbd7 8.0-0 Re8 9.d5 And here Semkov only considers 9...Ng4, but in fact it is 9...Nh5 that is all the rage now and it has scored quite well for Black in practice, with Radjabov raising the profile of the line with a convincing win over Gelfand in 2008, indeed another top player Victor Bologan has played this very line quite often throughout his carreer and not without success.

Returning to the FPA: I have only barely had a chance to consider his concepts vs Black's main tries 9...Bg4 and 9...Re8, of which I have only had experience in the former. Semkov's main concept vs 9...Bg4 is an all assault on the Black king based on the pawn structure f4,g5,h4 and the pawn breaks e5, f5 and h5, this is quite dangerous for both sides, but particularly for Black if he does not know what he's doing. I would recommend a careful study of J.Parker vs T. Radjabov 2008, where Radjabov entered this dangerous structure a tempo down against a FPA specialist and still managed to prevail quite handily.

Parker,J (2538) - Radjabov,T (2751) [A68]
24th ECC Kallithea GRE (2), 18.10.2008

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.f4 c5 6.d5 0-0 7.Nf3 e6 8.Be2 exd5 9.cxd5 Bg4 10.0-0 Bxf3 11.Bxf3 Nbd7 12.g4 Ne8 13.g5 Nc7 14.Bg4 Bd4+ 15.Kh1 Qe7 16.Ne2 Bg7 17.Ng3 f6 18.h4 b5 19.Kg2 Rab8 20.e5 f5 21.Bf3 Nb6 22.Re1 b4 23.Be3 Qd7 24.e6 Qb5 25.h5 Bxb2 26.hxg6 hxg6 27.Rh1 Bg7 28.Qg1 Nbxd5 29.Bxd5 Nxd5 30.Qh2 Nxe3+ 31.Kf3 Qb7+ 32.Kxe3 Bxa1 0-1

This book also claims to be offering a new approach to the Four Pawns Attack, based on the original analysis of the author. However such a claim is not completely accurate, as the whole concept of this variation for White is to attack in the Centre and on the Kingside, nothing new there, the pawn structure along with all the attendant pawn breaks are all well known and employed regurlarly, nothing new there either. What seems to be new are the specifics and accuracy in the execution of these plans, and it is on these factors ultimately that the true merits of this book will be measured.

It will take me some time to fully work my way through through all the ideas and analysis presented in this book,  before I can post a review that will really do it justice, but my initial reaction as a King's Indian advocate is that Black need not worry unduly.

The book is an amazing piece of work. ORIGINAL WORK. From rank 1-10 i give it a clear 10.

You can find holes? Perhaps. But the work done for you is really huge.

One of the best books around.

Semkov - you've written a very interesting book and confirmed my suspicions that na6 is not so strong even though Hebden is still playing this but you may have seen him go 0-2 at the recent Southend tournament.

One point on the 'modern' section, it doesn't appear that your book deals with the KID nbd7 re8 followed by nh5 and bf8 as advocated by Dembo in the Dangerous weapons series. Have you any recommendation against that ?

On 9..re8 is anyone really brave enough to play this move as there is a lot for anyone defending to learn and the FPA isn't the most common line

Here's another idea - what happens after 9...Bg4 10. 0-0 Nbd7 11. h3 Bxf3 12. Bxf3 Re8 13. g4 Qa5!?

Maybe the typical 14. e5 dxe5 15. g5 is a try, but after 15...Nh5 16. Bxh5 gxh5 17. f5, Black has 17...e4 and 17...c4, neither of which looks too clear to me.

@Jormechea: Well if you love your losses, you're a better man than I am.  But I don't think that there is much danger of people fleeing from this defense.  At least not until more copies of this book are sold (sorry, I couldn't resist).

Just checked the website and noticed that the actual title announced is "Kill KID 1" Unless that is a typo, it suggests that this is the first part of a series. So presumably the series will offer other repertoires against the KID or perhaps it is a serious of similar neanderthal repertoires against a range of systems with the KID just having been the first. Wink

I have not had time to read all of this thread but I dont like the idea of any one wanting to kill the Kings Indian. This openings history is one of the most beautiful to watch. I have played the kings indian for the past 8 years loving every win and every loss. Its aesthetically pleasing to any one who walks by a game in the kings indian. I dont tend to fear any system of development against the kings indian. Every try leads to a good game of chess either way.

Well, maybe Semkov's new ideas will cause theory eventually to say the 4PA is +=, maybe they won't.  But I don't think this point is particularly worth debating.  The merit of this work is that it presents many interesting new ideas that appear to have some promise.  That surely should be enough to justify anyone's purchases of it, anyone interested in the KID at any rate.

@gewgaw:  So you compare yourself to Shirov, eh?

It's without question worth the money. The approach in nearly every line is different than what what theory considers to be best. Secondly, the lines just seem more dangerous for Black, regardless of the final evaluations.

I cant imagine a forced line until move 30 - be careful playing such lines with White, there may be a lot of nasty surprises along the way. I suspect a similar approach as in Khalifman's books where every line ends at least with a += just to tell the reader - "Hey look, I promise you an advantage in every line". In reality you can read += as = in most of the cases...

Tony, where have you found main lines that finish with an equality?! If it were the case, I really would not have bored anyone of you with a whole book. Black might find equality, but I still do not know exactly how?

On page 25, you have the line starting with 9...Bg4 and 12...Re8 ending with 30. Rf5+=. That said, if you go a little bit farther, for instance 30...Rdxe4 31. Rxe5 Rxe5 32. Rxe5 dxe5 33. Ne3 Qb6 34. Kf2 Qd4 35. Qh6 Qf4+ 36. Ke2 Qxg5 37. Qxg5 Nxg5 38. d6 a5! = if you play it out farther....of course, it's a rather long line, maybe I missed something. There's also 33. g6 Nxf6 34. gxf7+ Kg7 35. Qxe5 Kxf7 36. Qe6+ Kf8 37. Ne3 Qe7 = or 33. Nf2 Qc7!=

All that said, it's possible that 23. Qg2!? is an idea, for instance 23...bxa2 24. Nxc3 and now:

24...Bxc3 25. bxc3 Ne5 (25...Qa5? 26. g6! Ne5 27. Bd4, when White will play 28. Ra1 and 29. Rxa2 with a large advantage.) 26. Bd4 followed by picking up the a-pawn again, when White appears to be a little better.

24...Be5 25. Nxa2 Rb8 26. Nc3 Rb3 27. Re2 and now:

27...Qc7 28. Qf3 with a big advantage

27...Bxc3 28. bxc3 Rxc3 29. Qf3 with a big advantage

27...Qb8 28. g6 f6 29. Ra1!? with some advantage to White.

Black can also try 25...Nc5, when White can try either 26. Bxc5 Rxc5 27. Nc3 or 26. g6 Qf6 27. Re2! but maybe it's nothing.

I could have missed something obvious somewhere, but 23. Qg2!? at least leaves the game a bit more complicated.

The real chess discussion has started and now you can understand why I added to the title "1". Because when one tries to develop a whole new system from a scratch, that could be only a starting point for more analysis. By the way, I forgot to include in the book some analysis which might be of interest. You can find it at:
http://chess-stars.com/graphics/eshop/books_special/FPA-analysis.pgn

Just saw Sean Marsh's review - a positive one. Although he is a bit charitable at times.

It looks interesting and probably this approach can win a lot of games against opponents who like being on the offensive as Semkov said. On the other hand, we'll wait and see for other reviewers and practioners.

Here's one thing to add. Some of Semkov's lines still end in equality for Black. That doesn't really mean that this book doesn't change anything. That doesn't mean the 4PA sucks. Sure, it's the 4PA, and Black will always have something. In fact, you could go so far as to say it's the King's Indian, and Black will always have something, even against the toughest lines. The difference between all the lines lies in how hard it is for Black to prove it and navigate through all the White tries to equality, or something close to it. If you ask me, Semkov's book changes theory in a way that makes it harder for Black to prove he's okay in the 4PA, and that's all you can ask for as White if you ask me.

In my opinion the 4PA is a great choice against the KID. Black rarely studies it as much as the other White tries, and it results in positions with a different flavor than all the other tries.

To make blanket statements about an opening system that's been around forever, especially when someone comes out with something that apparently changes the state of that system, is just silly and unhelpful to everyone else in the forums.

We're not really talking much about chess, are we, irrespective of who may have the burden of proof?

Buy Semkov's book or don't, respect the Four Pawns or don't, I really don't care.  But I have the book and it appears to be good, notwithstanding that not every last one of Black's ideas has been treated.  I may change my mind when I have a chance to check the analyses, but for now, it suits me fine if I'm the only one in this world with this book on my shelf.

But as for chess, 9...Re8 10.e5 dxe5 11.fxe5 Ng4 12.e6 fxe6 13.d6 Qb6 14.Ng5 and Semkov now considers 14...Nh6 and 14...Ne5.  But obviously 14...Nf6 should be a candidate, and I can't see why Black is not reasonbly O.K. here.

Please don't accuse me of bowing, "genuflecting" or anything like that. In fact, elsewhere I have criticized the guy ( http://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1238886130/0) , and I'm known on this board for reminding people of their title-worship.

My point is that we still have to take analysis produced by Watson seriously. What a facile thing it is to simply dismiss Watson out of hand.

Possibly the book is fantastic and turns theory on it's head. I don't think though that the burden is on the skeptics, especially since the book considers moves  "...considered either unimportant by existing theory.." and is "...akin to Monson's book on the Belgrade."

I'm not holding my breath.

Not absolutely necessary, but it's a good check. If a Four Pawns advocate can't clear that hurdle, what should we say?

Also taken as a whole it is a complete repertoire, and so far I have found no obvious omissions of important Black ideas.  In fact he even says how he thinks White should treat the Modern and Old Indian.

Well, as far as I can see there's nothing on Watson's 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 d6 5. f4 O-O 6. Nf3 c5 7. d5 e6 8. Be2 exd5 9. cxd5 Nbd7 10. O-O Re8 11. Qc2 Qe7, there's nothing about Watson's 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 d6 5. f4 O-O 6. Nf3 c5 7. d5 e6 8. Be2 exd5 9. cxd5 Qe7.

Watson's alternative recommendation 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 d6 5. f4 O-O 6. Nf3 c5 7. d5 e6 8. Be2 exd5 9. cxd5 Bg4 10. O-O Nbd7 11. h3 Bxf3 12. Bxf3 Rb8 is only covered with a brief "transposes to another line", when it is at least not 100% clear to me that the transposition has to occur after 13.g4, as black could have some extra options.

That's odd.  I could swear that I posted a short review of this book over the weekend, and now it's not here.  It was favorable.  Now I'll have to go to the trouble of retyping it.

But as to what sources were consulted, I'm not sure that's strictly relevant, since the lines considered by Semkov are either wholly original or are considered little by-ways by existing theory.  This is a work of original analysis akin to Monson's book on the Belgrade.

Jesting? Or confused?
If the latter, you may have become confused between two different threads: a KID repertoire book for black, and a white 4P text for white (this one).

It looks like some of the obvious sources were not considered for this book and in fact Watson's recommendations from the Guide to the Modern Benoni are not analysed, at all. I guess Perhaps Dangerous Weapons: The King's Indian came out too late, but Watson would have seemed obvious to me.

Well, I have just the opposite opinion. KID players like to stick to their typical attacks on the White king. They usually hate to be fiercely attacked  themselves by a well prepared opponent. This is the main reason I like so much the FPA. Many devoted KID players try tricky  move orders to avoid the FPA and land into murky positions in the opening.
By the way, if I was afraid that John Watson could refute my ideas, I would not have written anything. The truth is that Rybka and much better players will put an effort and they will certainly come up with something, but then other players will improve, and so chess is going on. I only claim that the old theory is wrong and I propose new ways backed with deep analysis. If someone can do better, let see him. It is easy to criticise, but difficult to come up with original ideas and have guts to throw them to the lions (sorry, to the forum members).

No apology needed and I am happy to see you make the statements you make in the forums.  I was on the fence, but have now decided to purchase the book because it has this same attitude you display and transfers it to playable moves to defeat KID, then I am sure it will be excellent book and very worthy.

It is senseless to claim that the FPA sucks. Yes, it does, but my book tries to change that so one should comment on which of my variations exactly sucks.

Emphasis mine above.

I'm not going to engage in an analytical war. Of course, I think you'd win anyway. It reminds me of the story of an argument between Bogoljubow and Sämisch. Sämisch kept losing the argument between the two room mates, but technically he was right. It's just that he was the weaker player.

My point is that I see the FP as giving Black the kind of game that he wants. I had a good friend who liked playing this variation. Despite getting advantages sometimes he ended up clobbered because one slip and Black's tactical play is always just beneath the surface - ready to pounce. I doubt very much (sorry) whether a book on the FP can withstand scrutiny by say, John Watson or someone like him.

Also, this opening has certain qualities I don't like. Among them is the fact the preponderance of victories for White seem more related to rating than any other factor. You'd have to really upset the applecart, if you pardon the phrase, to demonstrate something worthwhile.

I think Semkov's claim is that his new analysis will fundamentally change the assessment of the Four Pawn's Attack. I am skeptical, but am prepared to reserve judgement.

Needless to say after viewing and analysing Dzinzi's offering, I felt I had been ripped off, hopefully for the last time.

Chess Stars has good record of publishing, Dzindzi not so.  I always felt Dzindzi publishes for the unwashed masses, Chess Stars for strong Chess players.  Are you implying they may have become the same level of effort?

"To avoid getting ripped off by chess authors we probably must stop buying chess books."

Perhaps you do not realise that people actually have stopped buying chess books already! We at Chess Stars have always been trying to publish only the best works we can afford, but I'm afraid that many players cannot tell the difference. The flood of rubbish devaluates the really good books and makes it impossible to produce them.

I don't find it's a problem. On the contrary, spilling more digital ink over the issue is.

I'm hoping we can go back to a discussion of what a Future Kill the KID should be about.

So maybe it would be a good idea to write a book, titled, e.g.
Mein Kampf in the King's Indian
and to explain in the very beginning that it is not about Hitler in fact, so dear readers should not worry.
Besides, non-chessplaying Nazi may well buy such a book by mistake, or just because the title makes them curious.

Well, I do appreciate a good sense of humor. Personally, I would have titled the book The Protocols of the King's Indian Elders, or maybe The Turner King's Indian Diaries.

Bibs, I consider the position after 9...Ne8 10.0-0 c5 (with reversed move order) as a main line, but of course I do not pay any attention to 11 dc6. White owns the centre and he  must keep it, but not surrender it.

To GMGolubev:
You'll be surprised to learn that you are the "culprit" this book to be created. When you presented me your own book "Understanding the King's Indian" a couple of years ago, I found some attractive ideas in it and I started analysing the FPA again. I tell about that in my book! Please call me to my E-mail semkov@chess-stars.com.

It's interesting that McShane chose 10...c5 with apparent blockading intentions.  If I'm not mistaken, 10...c6 has been the main idea.  As White I won a few OTB games (not against the likes of Bibs or Topnotch, I admit) in that line with simple development and play on the queenside.  Be3 fits in, as I recall.

@RubenKuijper.  Like I said, the 4PA is quite dangerous. I don't think that many people would argue with that.  Whether it is good for advantage is another question.  Theory would say not, but I have Semko's book on order from NIC, and I look forward to seeing what it says.

Mr Semkov

I look forward to receiving your new text when copies make their way over to this part of the world. Looks an ambitious work. Credit to you for your efforts.

Do you also consider 9...Ne8 as in the following game (thanks to Markovich for providing). Appears missing from the contents page
Or does it transpose? Thoughts?

What to say, Semko. Our views are different. Mine are more exotic, possibly. (Already before 'Kill Bill' was released, I considered Tarantino, to whom you referred, as the most successful post-WW2 underminer of the Western/Christian civilisation). I am unhappy that I will not be able to read your book, which, I am sure, has a decent chess content and may bring some points for the less sensitive readers.

I'm thinking about buying this book. How is the 4PA currently doing? Is it really dangerous? Or are those 4pawns on the 4th rank only looking dangerous? Does it give white chances to fight? Or are there many forced-draw lines? What are your personal opinions about this book?

Sorry about my sense of humor. I thought if Tarantino could name a movie Kill Bill, I certainly can name a book Kill KID. Because the system I advocate aims exactly that. In my practice I rarely reach 40 moves, usually on the winning side. Now some clarifications.

1. I wrote this book not because I am a publisher and was looking for some catchy title or subject. I wrote it because I had a lot to share. I wanted to write this book ever since 1993, but I had a big hole in the main line. Only recently I finally found a valuable idea to fix it.

2. The book is only 140 pages because it is entirely based on original analysis. I believe that the whole theory of the FPA should be thrown to the trash bin and I do not use any of it. Sorry if you think 140 pages is too little. I know a lot of GMs who have not invented even 10 pages of original ideas of their own. I'm proud of my work and I hope that people who do buy the book will appreciate the quantity of information inside.

3. I know very well that the FPA is not a commercial subject. Nobody plays it and rightly so. The main lines were good for Black. In both ...Re8 or Bg4 Black was doing OK. Well, I really think that after ...Bg4 Black should have hard time to survive and I offer a new approach for white. Systems with ...Na6 in my opinion are clearly in White's favour (I offer novelties to the repertoire suggested by other authors) and only ...Re8 remains challenging. Here was my main analytical effort and I came up with a new, mostly positional, system which I tried to develop as deeply as possible.

4. I have always wanted as White to have some aggressive weapon against the KID. There are little openings where White allows to be attacked the way he does in the Classical system. He may be better, but he may also end up mated, especially in rapid chess. I believe that such thing is not normal and White should have some means to fight for the initiative himself. THE FPA is one such try. Maybe there are other interesting systems that need attention. So in future we might  see Kill KID 2, but not written by me. I will be waiting for good propositions.

Amen!

And as a K.I.D player let me just say I'm hoping this book sells well and the 4 Pawns Attack becomes popular again.  Wink

I hope don't offend, but the title of this work is becoming a wearisome subject.  I suggest that if it's to be discussed any further, it be done in a "General Chess" thread.  Let's talk about chess here.

I don't think the title was in any way supposed to be a joke or a pun. There are clearly seen periods in between the KID, and there's no "the" to be seen in the title, making the implication harder to take seriously as well. If someone wrote a book called Kill the Nimzo, there would be no problem! I simply think it was written this way because Kill the King's Indian Defense takes up too much space!  Grin

I just received a copy of Kill the KID, and just from a quick cursory glance, it looks amazing! Half the book covers the critical variations in the Benoni structure, and the other half covers the rest. It seems as though even if Black has some way to make it through the maze of 9...Re8 10. e6!? fxe6 11. d6, it's extraordinarily dangerous. I'm excited!  Grin

What about the 9...Bg4 Lines, those seem the most stable for Black.

Against 9...Bg4, he recommends 10. 0-0 Nbd7 11. h3!?, mostly following up with an attack on the kingside with g4, h4, g5, h5, etc...No Re1, no a4 normally. Skull cracking good fun!

Grin

Nice, I have it on order, along with Konikowski's book.  But really I think that the 4PA is just plain dangerous whether in 10.e6 or 10.Bg5 or 10.0-0.  Not saying it wins, but it's plenty dangerous.

Agree with that certainly.

Though look at the 4P game
Palliser-McShane from last weekend at 4NCL.
White downed in 20. Good work from the black knights. This deserves a mention in next month's effort from Golubev-san.

Good to see Luke back.

Yeah, although I think that 11.dxc6 was a clunker.

Palliser-McShane quoted from 4ncl, Pein's notations (evidently):

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.f4 0-0 6.Nf3 Na6 7.Bd3 e5! 8.fxe5 dxe5 9.d5 (9.Nxe5 Qxd4; 9.dxe5 Nc5 10.Bc2 Qxd1+ 11.Nxd1 Ng4=) 9...Ne8 10.0-0 c5 11.dxc6 bxc6 12.Be3 Nec7 13.a3 Ne6 14.b4 Nd4 15.Ne2 Nxf3+ 16.Rxf3 Nc7 17.h3 (17.Qd2!?) 17...Ne6 18.Ra2?! Well it seems to me that this Maroczy structure with the White pawn on f4 is a good deal less stable than that with f3.  So without taking up the burden of saying what Black should do exactly, I think that there should be some opportunities for Black to make trouble here.

I wonder what Rybka "intends" after 9...Qb6 10. Nc2, which as far as I know has long been considered slightly better for White.

I'm reminded that, according to Drazen Marovic, Leonid Stein was of the firm opinion that 8...Na6 is more promising than 8...Nc6 (a view with which Nunn seemed to agree about a decade ago).

Yes but Timothy Taylor made Marovic look like an idiot in his book on Beating The Kid, indeed he convincingly  blew quite a big hole in the often quoted Krzisnik - Marovic 1963, which theory holds as equal for Black but in reality he is close to dead lost.

Regarding 9...Qb6 I agree that theory holds that White is much better after 10.Nc2, but considering that Rybka is now the World's strongest player could signal that that assesment needs revising. As we speak I have Rybka working on it. While on the subject of Rybka, When GM Jan Gustafson was asked in New In Chess 2009/2 who his favorite player of all time was, his depressing answer was quote "Rybka 3. Sad but true".

Chess is currently experiencing a renaissance whereby none of the old theory in sharp openings can be trusted and everything has to be re-evaluated through modern technological eyes. Its as if chess is reborn.

Just to clarify, my problem is not finding equality for black in this line, but rather trying to avoid a sterile position. In general players that opt for this line as White are usually the weaker player trying to make a draw against a stronger opponent, no disrespect to Timothy Taylor who did show that if Black goes crazy he would be punished.

Yeah, well... I wonder what vol 2 should be about...

Maybe it will be about how to snuff out Black's winning chances with the 4 Pawns Attack part two, featuring:  1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 g6 3 Nc3 Bg7 4 e4 d6 5 f4 0-0 6 Nf3 c5 7.Be2!! cxd4 8. Nxd4 Nc6 9.Be3. LOL.

Seriously though, how does one generate winning chances in that line for Black?

Ideas welcome.

The title was just meant to sell copies. I don't think it's honestly inteneded as a pun on infantcide or something. If you're going to go off on a tangent (Chess B...... might not be any good, cuz you know...you might offend somebody there) shouldn't it be substantive?

IMO, the title is really not OK. I know well that Chess Stars are a good people who published dozens of the interesting chess books. Hopefully they will publish a book under another title, sooner or later. About the current title... well, it is not a book that I want to owe. Maybe I have to improve my sense of humour first.

I agree, in bad taste. Perhaps differing humour, differing attitudes in different countries. From Eastern Europe somewhere I know, perhaps the Chess Stars folk hail from the same town featured in that shocking documentary " Hostel".

Anyhow, I look forward to the text and will buy, just so long as book cover has no pics of children being hacked apart.

What, no 8-year-old chess kids being torn to shreds by the dread 4PA?  T'would serve 'em right for disobeying their coach and not learning how to play the Tarrasch.

But those of us in the dollar zone can barely afford to buy chess books anymore, you know?  Not when this under-150-page effort goes for $35.00 (or so) plus shipping from Transylvania.  I declare, if the dollar and the euro were reversed right now, I'd retire to the Côte d'Azur.

Well, I'm not thrilled about the Four Pawns...but a series is interesting and shows the publisher is thinking differently. According to the link posted by gewgaw (thanks by the way), we may have a voice in what's selected for Vol. 2 ...So how about someone creating a poll or thread (or we can discuss it here I guess) with suggestions?

You certainly don't need to improve your sense of humour. If it's a joke then it's a bad one. You need to raise your level of tolerancy for book titles. In the end it's the content that matters.

I imagine you will have to wait till it has been written, then published.
Chess Stars publishing.
Then your online book seller or chess shop of choice.

Looks interesting fare certainly.

Semkov doesn´t waste space with moves like 9.ed5 instead of 9.cd5 for example. I definitely buy this book to have a real weapon against the KID. If black isn´t full prepared I´ll make mincemeat of my opponent. Roll Eyes

No, I haven't updated my 4PA notes in a while, since I've been dabbling in the the Averbach lately.  But I expect to get around to it.  I've faced 6...e5 a few times, but not from a sophisticated opponent. I'd like to learn what the new idea is.

I'm interested that anyone would propose 6...e5, given that Black is supposed to be so wonderfully happy with 9...Re8; with 9...Bg5 and with 6...Na6.  Apparently Black's cup just runs over with good answers to the 4PA, yet they keep looking for new ideas!?

Markovich have you had a chance to consider Svidler's 6...e5 which is the subject of the recent KID dangerous weapons book

Haha, no I'm not translating it. I'd like to divulge some information, but I don't want to get in trouble with Semko if he doesn't want me to say anything. This is what I will say - here is my 4PA repertoire:

1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 d6 5. f4 0-0 6. Nf3

6...c5 7. d5 e6 8. Be2 exd5 9. cxd5 and now:

     9...Re8 10. e5 dxe5 11. fxe5 Ng4 12. Bg5

     9...Bg4 10. 0-0 Nbd7 11. Re1

6...Na6 7. e5

None of my final moves in each variation match what Semkov thinks is best. It promises to be a truly interesting and exciting read! He also promises to cover weird Modern move orders where Black refuses to play ...d6 or ...Nf6 I belive.

The are the sharpest lines, of course.  I'm happy to see that he finds it possible to recommend 7.e5 against 6...Na6.  In the past I've played 7.Bd3, but it gives rise to a maneuvering game with += at best.  In principle I'd like to play something more aggressive.

This book promises to be quite interesting. I know a little bit more about it than everyone else, and at the very least, this book will not be a Konikowski / Vaisser rehash.

Ooooh, you are a tease. Are you translating it?

I´m curious, if semkov still evaluates 5.f4 0-0 6.Nf3 Na6 7.h4 e5 8.h5 as better for white;

The older, the better - over 2200 and still rising.

Well, this is heady stuff indeed for us 4PA aficionados.  I will certainly buy this book.  But while I think that the 4PA is underrated, I'll be surprised if it guarantees +=.

i guess the title is inspired from Kill bill Vol1 & Vol2

Chess-stars books are of very nice quality, and semkov does a very good job. Lets see this one.

Well, the book promises to be based on original analysis, so apparently this is a line that Semko plays himself or at least has spent considerable time looking at.  Wouldn't you rather have an author write on something he plays or knows, than churn out a book on some other line?

Yes, Antillian I wondered the same. I believe there are two reasons. One is that Publishers want a sexy opening choice (flashy, agressive). I also believe that authors choose variations in part, to ease their work and to avoid having to deal with too may options for the other side. If the book dealt with, say, the Petrosian KID, moves like c6, Na6, etc...would have to be examined. These two criteria tend to produce variations that rarely get outings at the 2700+ level.

Curiously, there is a song by the band Boys Noize called 'Kill the Kid', although it sounds more like people mucking around with instruments to me.

Returning to the book, http://www.chess-stars.com/forthcoming_books.html claims that the book will be authored by Semkov and it 'offers a complete White repertoire against the King's Indian Defence, Modern Benoni and rare move orders for Black, including Modern Defence.'

I expect that Konikowski's monograph on the Four Pawns Attack will be one of Semkov's main sources.

Whew....for a minute there, I thought this was a thread advocating infanticide.  Shocked

I don't understand this persistence on repertoire books advocating the Four Pawns attack against the KID/Benoni. This will be the third major work advocating this suspect system that KIDers generally seem prepared for - actually fourth if you include Dunnington's 1. d4 repertoire book.
