Still, if I had to recommend a shortcut, I would lean toward 6.Be3 Bg7 7.Be2 0-0 8.Qd2, which has similar ideas to the standard Dragon without the theoretical workload.

Seems a solid option for White. Check games by Jansa. As an outright winning attempt though Black should be more than OK in several lines.

I was thinking of picking this line up myself at one point also but eventually rejected it in favour of 6.g3, not that I can say that is objectively any better I just preferred the positions.

I find 6.Bc4 Bg7 7.h3 0-0 8.Bb3 Nc6 9.Be3 Na5 10.0-0 b6 a hard nut to crack. Maybe 9.Bg5 offers more chances, but then White must find an alternative for 2...Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 g6 5.Nc3 Bg7 6.Be3 Nf6 7.Bc4 0-0 8.Bb3 d6 9.h3.

Could be.  It's been regarded rather positively in books by Golubev, Mednis and Jansa.
