The Blackmar Deimar is a rabbit.  Someone once got bitten by it and claims its ferocious.  Most of us find it a bit gamey, but not bad in a casserole.

The French is a badger, not very dangerous unless you corner it and try to kill it.  Then watch out.

The King's Gambit is a wild boar:  endangered, dangerous if you try to take it on in a frontal assault, but fun to have its head on your mantle.

The Spanish is the lion, king of the openings.  It's well respected, but relatively rarely encountered in Europe or North America.

The Queen's gambit is the prarie dog:  It doesn't seem so big or threatening until you realise there are more pounds/kg of prarie dog than any other species of mammal on the plains.

The Sicilian is a blue whale; so big in scope that even those who study it can't quite grasp its enormity.

The Blackmar Deimar is a rabbit.  Someone once got bitten by it and claims its ferocious.  Most of us find it a bit gamey, but not bad in a casserole.

c3 sic = chicken's opening

no way lol. c3 is like a lynx ready to pounce but tires quickly.

I would say Grunfeld is like a bear.

Shall we call the Bird's a chicken..

Any Lev gambits a chicken with its head cutoff?

Englund might be amoeba.

Here is my pick regarding the sicilians :

...
Najdorf                     Lion          most ferocious and powerful
Dragon                      Naja          lethal but single-aimed
...

Funny, I was always terming Najdorf as Naja due to the common 1st syllable! But now I think of it: Najdorf = Orca (most versatile predator)

Any ideas for the French? Maybe Bear (ready to stand on its feet and fight?)

Classical                   Panthera   a dangerous animal
Najdorf                     Lion          most ferocious and powerful
Scheveningen            Whale        not easily disturbed
Kan                           Manta Ray  solid and with a sting
Taimanov                  Porcupine  not easy for opponents to handle
4Knights                    Hornet      irritating but not aggressive
Sveshnikov                Giraffe      defends well, ferocious kicks
Kalashnikov               Gnu           resilient, to some extent
Dragon                      Naja          lethal but single-aimed
Accelerated Dragon    Panda        the sleepiest sicilian?
c3 sicilian                   Cheetah    strong start but quickly out of steam
Morra Gambit             Ostrich      Head in the sand, for some reason
Bb5 sicilian                Tortoise     Munch, munch…
Closed sicilian            Fugu          Inflates a lot, but not dangerous
                                                unless you make a mistake
Grand Prix sicilian       Jackal       some bite but not much

Quite a comprehensive list, Zoo. You know your animals. Are you a zoologist by any chance?  Wink

The Najdorf could be a Swan.

Then the Classical is a Duck.  Roll Eyes

Here are my nominations:

King's Indian Attack = Penguin
Tarrasch Defence = Dalmation
Petroff Defence = Sheep

Caro-Kann = Lamb

I like the bold but Penguin  Shocked?! C'mon seriously? I was thinking a hyena myself.

I never realised this thread was actually serious Shocked. I assumed it was some sort of joke, especially given some of the replies.

I think the majority of lines given in 'SOS' are hyenas: They have some bite if your opponent isn't ready and it may even make them laugh at your ridiculous-looking (but logical) moves, but you can always avoid it, and even if you do run into an SOS, you'll find a way out of it alive.

For the BDG I would say the dengue-mosquito - small, irritating and if you don't pay attention to it, deadly because of the dengue-virus.

Alekhine: horse.
GPA: chaindog - much barking, no bite if Black keeps more than the critical distance.
Scheveningen: Siamese cat. Looks sleepy and innocent, but you never know when it will strike.
